Theoretical question - high school rosters

just heard that upper classman rank over Freshman... you know, the beating of dead horse continues/resumes. Coaches should play the 9 best IMO. HS coaches are paid to win IMO. The game "really does pass up less talented players from time to time even though they are older" in high school sports. SMH.... I'm sure some will reject this thought process and for that I welcome the criticism. One's opinion vs the other... part of our wonderful freedom of speech.

Lester ... if I'm a high school varsity coach, then I want to be paid to win and so I agree about playing the best ... we know that's the case in the "revenue/bigger name" sports like football and basketball, but is that always the case in softball? And keep in mind that the head coach is usually responsible for the JV and freshman programs as well.

And while I agree that our job as coaches is more about teaching and coaching the game, I have mixed feelings about having girls on the team who show up once a year to tryout, and don't work on their game the rest of the year. I really do like the notion of keeping girls who have been around 4 years, but only if they're going to have a great attitude and not act like they're entitled. And sorry, but I think that is hard to find. In the 4 years I coached, we probably kept 7-8 girls who were seniors who were not full-time starters, and only one of them had a great attitude and was there for the team. Maybe we were doing something wrong ...

I agree with your post... all makes sense. As you know, Freshman come in every year. And, they will be there for 4 years or ideally so if better, no time like the present to begin chemistry. Cancer attitudes are just that. So again, all true and understood. There is a lot to be said about chemistry, I for one know that in my team. New players on a team can be like shampooing a cat... a freakin' mess and come out all beat up.

Looking at the Chicago Bulls when Jordan was there... those "satellite" players that started along side him were in many cases "B" players but because they were "great" with him and chemistry on the court rocked,...it was an ideal situation. I know this exists in many venues including HS softball.
