Cliff Philen his teams have won multiple National Championships and played in several Super World Series Finals winning one. Both his daughters received softball scholarships (Wright State and Youngstown State) as well as most of his past players. He knows how to teach the game at the highest level. Just a great teacher. He will be coaching the Ohio Outlaws Black 14U team.

What national championships has Cliff won? Sounds like he knows what he is doing if he can do it multiple times.

Cliff graciously worked with DD on Kobata skills prior to last years tryouts, he is one that truly cares about the girls and gives back to the game. Doug

I would like to put my vote in for the Nightmare 16u coaches out of the Columbus area. The Abbruzzese brothers do a very good job at all phases of the game. They always seem to have good teams whether they are softball, wrestling, or football. Old school mentality with new wave thinking, their teams are very disciplined, athletic, well conditioned, and strong fundamentally. They really know how to motivate the players to play hard.

Every sporting endeavor I have seen them associated with over the years they are very, very successful no matter the team, no matter the sport.
I second this thought!!!!!!!!

i thin there are a couple of guys i think that are good.
Eric troutman- Gahanna Lady Lions 12u
Brian Anderson- Ohio Dragons 16u
Steve Woodward- Gahanna Lady Lions (retired)

Steve is still in the coaching game...Laser's Gray (13U). He does a fantastic job and his girls all love him. I would definetly put him up in the top coaches pick.

The problem with most travel coaches is that their egos are bigger than their abilities. The best coaches are the ones that instruct their players and prepare them to play at a high level and don't do it becasue their daughter is on the team. I wonder how many coaches actually take the time to invest in educating themselves on how to be the best. I have seen hundreds of incredibly stupid coaching decisions in travel and high school ball.

The most important thing is the player and not the coach and; unfortunately, some coaches feel the need to become part of the game with their behavior.

Typical response of an egotistical travel team coach. I am a coach too and it really bothers me to see some coaches making a spectical of themselves while the daughters go hide becasue they are embarrassed.

Yea, and it's too bad that some of you High School and Travel Ball coaches think most parents are a bunch of ???? who don't know a **** thing. Get a clue. Some of the most successfull coaches posted here have been parents at some point, which is were they developed their genuine interest and passion for the sport...any sport. And some of them bring more to the table than you give them credit for. The word "Coach" in front of your name does not make you an expert! But what really erks me is when a HS coach completely disrespects and discounts those parents who support them. Parents who spend 12 months a year and countless hours and amounts of money in the pursuit of advancing their DD's skills when you may only have them for a few months!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not saying there are not any good High School or Travel coaches because there are obviously a ton of them. However, when arrogance and ego dominates over preparation and professionalism then the players and the quality of the game suffers.

NFCA Travel Ball Award
Beverly Bandits Named 2011 NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Beverly Bandits 18U Gold (Ill.), led by head coach Bill Conroy and assisted by Russell Cooper, Brittany Dixon, Chris Morris, and Jen Tyrell, have been named as the 2011 NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the Year.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” said Conroy. “This award is a testament to not only the Beverly Bandits’ season this year and the kids that played for us, but the program as a whole and those who have come before. To me, it is really more of a lifetime achievement award. It was made possible by not only this year’s coaching staff and players, but all those who have helped pave the way for our success.”
The Bandits turned in an astounding 72-8-2 record over the 2010-2011 season and lost just three times during elimination play during the summer.
Conroy’s squad won both the Orland Park Sparks tournament and the Boulder Independence Day tournament in 2011. At the Boulder event, the Bandits were the only team from the Midwest in the final eight and were the only team from outside of California in the final eight at the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships, where they finished third.
In addition to success on the field, all 17 seniors from this year’s team have signed with Division I teams and will continue to pursue their education.
The NFCA Travel Ball National Coaching Staff of the year award is presented annually to the top member coaching staff as voted on by the Association’s travel ball membership. (Spy note: Only teams which are member s of NFCA are eligible for this award.)
