Travel Coaches - Coaching Highschool

I have a question.
What does everyone think of travel ball coaches coaching a highschool team?

The reason I ask is that it seems in alot of cases the travel ball coach has to ease up or reduce the practice time with the travel team because of their highschool team.

Some would say they should do one or the other.

When parents are paying alot of money for their daughters to be coached to improve their skills and the head coach has to miss, reduce, cancel practices and even cancel some tourneys that the travel team was going to play in... it would raise the question...."What am I paying for?" by the parents.

And yes I am a coach as well.

Thanks

There are many very good travel ball coaches also coaching high school. The only conflict would be if your travel ball team was a 10U-12U team, otherwise travel ball stops when high school season starts.

I would say it depends on the coach and what other things he or she has going on. In some cases the High School coach has access to facilities that the travel team can also benefit from being able to use at a significant cost savings over what other travel teams would have to pay.

Facilities, both indoor and outdoor, tend to be a challenge for most travel programs but I can see how being a high school coach could alleviate a big headache.

That being said, we declined an offer for my youngest daughter a couple years ago for this exact reason. The coach flat out told me that he coached high school and during HS season the travel team (10u) would not be playing or practicing much.

Agree with SBFamily.

Having a HS Coach also as a TB Coach can be a good thing- looks like you have someone coaching because they enjoy the game.

IF this is 10u and 12u, i don't see why the assistant coach cannot take the lead during the HS Coach's absence.

Not only that, alot of these concerns should have been addressed at tryouts...i know that doesn't always happen....

I coach 10u and high school. Although the times of my travel practices change during the high school season, the amount we practice and play doesn't. So for March/April/May it's softball 7 days a week, and a few doubleheader softball days. It's a lot, especially since I also coach at the same time a 12u rec team. Couldn't do it all without awesome assistants and an awesome wife!

If you have a quality travelball coach leading your high school program you'd better thank your AD and do what you can to support the leadership .

There are a number of high school coaches that do coach travel ball. Plus, when high school ball starts travel ball stops for high school kids.

Now don't confuse me.... is it "high school coach coaching travel ball" or "travel ball coach coaching high school"?????

I guess that would make the discussion a little more interesting.

I've seen travel coaches fill in to coach the HS teams in winter leagues and I think it is a great idea, as long as it doesn't effect their commitment to their travel team. I don't think it is right when a coach does accept that position and then decreases or cancels travel practices to make it both work. The travel players expect to get your time and commitment just as you expect to get theirs. Some coaches can make it work and some can't...those who can't, shouldn't accept the job.

I would have no issues with this as long as the travel team does not suffer. We will see what happens in the next few months. A lot of parents are worried that they will end up paying a lot of money for hardly and coaching from the head coach.
Now that's a problem for anyone in this times.

I think an important factor has been left out on the folks who responded to this thread. If your daughter is on your high school coaches travel team, your coach cannot coach any of your games in the fall due to the OHSAA rule. That's where your assistant coach/es come into play...

softballheart is right on. And equally important, if the travel ball team is stacked with more than four players from the HS team, all those HS players can't play together in fall exposure or other tournaments.

Ah but remember CGS, only is a rule if played outdoor.... Indoor they woul be ok.

You are correct and I was too, as I was only referring to fall tournaments/exposure events, which are to my knowledge virtually all outside events.

This is a conflict that should be worked out in advance. This situation is no different than a player accepting to be on a team, then taking weekends off to go on family vacation, or a Girl Scout trip. You know how upset some coaches get when confronted with a player that is unpredictable because of a lack of commitment.

A coaching staff should already have a working plan in place so the parents know.

Remember, most travel coaches are volunteers not being paid. If you are aware of this, perhaps working out a plan is in your best interest if the coach in question is good at coaching.
