I agree with the increase use of the change. A good one at the older ages is critical. Maybe it is because we have a bunch of former college pitchers down here giving lessons...not sure. What I also see a lot more of down here these days are lefty pitchers throwing wicked drop curves on the inside half to right handed hitters. REAL tough to hit!!

Mark,

I am sure you know Ron Marstiller from your Ohio days. In addition to teaching lefties that drop curve, he works with them to develop a rising curve that is pretty wicked.

A trend that I hope is short-lived I noticed last season was the girls in the long shorts were rolling them up to be almost hot pants with some wearing their jersey over to give you the illusion they had no pants on at all. Some of the off diamond relaxing zones looked like a slumber party.

I have tried for years to get girls to wear long pants for obvious reasons with no luck and now it's a fad-----go figure.

Don't forget about the wide head bands they want for use in the summer even tho they look like ear warmers for skiing. lol.

Trends coming:

Playing 2nd Base Up and 1st back with a slapper at the plate.

Pitchers doing that little 1/4-twist manuever before delivery.

Sparkling headbands and coordinating hair ribbons.
Apparently a girl has to look good while she gets dirty.

Oh yea - I remember Ron. Is he still teaching? A rising curve, huh?

Yep, it was one of our DD's most effective pitches, even though she plunked more than a few righties in the helmet when she was developing it.

We haven't spoken to Ron in several months, but to the best of our knowledge he is still teaching, out of the facility/business into which Westerville Grand Slam merged.

Maybe others have more recent news on Ron.

One of my 11yo pitchers goes to him. Pretty cool he made it to watch her pitch in Beavercreek a couple weekends ago. He gave me a tip to watch for when she has control issues.:)

Ron is still teaching at Mannino's Grand Slam in Dublin Village Center off of Sawmill Road.

Oh, and helmet painting... it's been a long time... is that still a fad at the younger ages?

Thanks for the update. When we [gulp] start out with the little ones again in a few years we'll either be asking him for connections with good 10u pitchers or sending whomever we select to see him (if she doesn't already have a pitching coach). Ron, as our DD used to say when she was 16/17 instead of her present age of 23, is the shizz. She'd still say something that in modern vernacular would convey the same message, I'm just not up on her current lingo. :p

I know that the Strongsville TD has been asking about vendors for helmet painting, so there must be some demand at the younger age levels.

Actually, those are just suggestions... it's wait and see...

Mine went from natural blonde to brassy blond to even more brassy blonde - then back to almost natural blonde. I think there's a "double-secret" course required for hair coloring if you play college ball!

Tim, just watch her team's website each year - the wife & I always got a kick out of the morphing hair colors!

I had a helmet painter at both the Maple Leaf & Cinderella Classic last year and she got very little business. I think that is on it's way out. Only had one person ask about a helmet painter this year at the Maple Leaf.
