14 tournaments at 16u? Either that includes 3-4 fall exposure events or the players on the team aren't playing Ohio HS ball.

According to the PM this is going to be a newly formed team and the team is not complete. I guess this coach is going to ask his/her players not to play HS ball or play a minimum of 4-5 fall exposure tournies. Either way, it sounds implausible. Oh well, good luck to them I guess.

Let's see 14 tournaments, you can at the 16u level realistically play in 8 or 9 tournaments in the summer, which is a really heavy summer schedule at that age, you'd have to play every weekend in the summer and would probably be missing a few the first weekend in June. That would leave 4 or 5 tournaments in the fall...you probably could do it, but it would more then likely a case of your eyes being bigger then your stomach. Personally I think at that age 5 or 6 tournaments in the summer and 2 or 3 in the fall is more in line. Putting you at 7-9 in the year.

Here's a scary reality ... some of those teams talking about playing in ASA/USA or Stingrays, etc., are newly formed teams and/or have new coaches at this level and don't really know themselves what it takes to get into those tourneys.

I have another question...again I just have question to better understand some stuff I am not insinuating someone is posting something wrong. The tourney that Valley Extreme had on June 24th.....wasn't that a berth to Nationals (not Eastern). Shame I cannot remember and I was in it, and turned down a berth; If i remember it was for Texas?? Is that the same Nationals the CGS is talking about??

The 14u ASA/USA nationals where in Midland, Texas I believe.

Yes, if you are talking about only the 14u age group and the ASA States that were held June 24 through June 26. ASA States in each age group typically provide four berths to the USA/ASA tournament. If you placed in the top four of that tournament, then the berth you turned down was for the big dance.

BTW, in answer to a question you previously raised, hosting an ASA States does not provide the host team with a berth to USA/ASA Nationals.

I believe they hosted ASA 14u states this year which did award ASA/USA berths.

@cgs

I think they were able to hand out more than 4; they had a whole list of teams and a lot (including ours) hand to turn it down.

Also, I am almost certain the MC Madness was able to go to Eastern Nationals because they hosted a tourney. I know a parent on the team and that is what I was told. If I remember correctly (bad memory) since our organization is hosting another tourney next year..we get berths. Not saying your wrong; just asking.

@Finch:

I never said that Warren couldn't award a berth to Eastern Nationals for hosting an Eastern Nationals qualifier. Again, that is different from USA/ASA Nationals. In most states you don't have to do anything to get a berth to Eastern Nationals. In contrast, you cannot get a berth to USA/ASA Nationals just by hosting a qualifier.

There may have been more than four berths to USA/ASA Nationals given at the ASA 14u States because there were problems at the 14u age with the other qualifiers that are typically run for each age group. And I know that some 14u teams passed by the USA/ASA berth because Texas was so far away . . . that's a bit surprising to me given how special the experience of attending a USA/ASA Nationals is in comparison to regional nationals. But Bill's point remains correct: unless you already have a berth in hand to USA/ASA, you shouldn't be advertising without qualification that you are going to the 2012 USA/ASA Nationals and unless you have some side deal with the invitational tournaments in or out of Ohio, you shouldn't be advertising without qualification that you are going to those tournaments. State that you are going to try to go to those tournaments.

I am asking a question. I heard if that your org is hosting an ASA qualifier (i think for 2nd year) that your teams get an automatic berth?? I know of one team (not mine) went to the Eastern Qualifiers on this fact. Maybe that's why some of them are posting that they are going to the nationals.

We have hosted ASA Eastern qualifier for several years now and have never received a host birth.

Other than checking the teams websites is there another location to do our homework on the teams we are trying out for? New to tryouts so just want to be informed. I dont always believe what I hear so we did visit some teams and saw how they played or how they are coached. What else can we do to get it right or at least try to .lol thanks

@balindasdaughter:

Sounds like you are doing many things correctly. You could also PM some OFC posters who appear to have an overview of Ohio travel ball. You will, of course, need to take their responses in the context of their association with a particular organization. If your daughter is of an age group where the Buckeye Heat organization is looking, for example, I will probably recommend Buckeye Heat teams at that age group. But I will also recommend several other teams that have great coaches and great track records and I will definitely recommend teams that have positional needs that I know to fit with your daughter's.

There are many many other coaches and parents who participate on this forum whom I would trust to give you good advice. Perhaps you should post under "Players Looking for a Team" and make it clear in your post that you are looking for advice about teams in the geographical area that is acceptable to you.

E-mail the coach. I never mind getting inquiries before tryouts and answering questions.

hosting is probably harder than winning one with your team....:cap:

Yeah, given berths for hosting, what is that...:cool:

Not too tough to get a bid to Easterns. Call Warren, tell him the ASA tournies you played in. Also, playing in States qualifies you. We played in all the national qualifiers for ASA and all but one stated that by entering, you qualify for an eastern bid.
