Umpiring Ohssa and ASA

I have finally decided to move up in the umpiring world. I am signed up to become an Ohssa class 2 umpire for high school softball. I want to be able to umpire ASA softball games too. Also what is needed to become an ASA certified umpire? I just can't seem to find where to do this. Also what can I umpire for travel ball with just the Ohsaa certification? I live in the Dayton area and am especially interested in opportunities in the dayton area but am open to traveling.

Thanks Nick

Yes, call your local commissioner..... or you can just fill out the umpire application on line and send it in...

once OHSAA certified, it is a pretty easy process. Find out the time of the ASA meetings and attend, pay ur fee and get the rule book, and then take the test which most regions give the answers to at the meeting. You should b fine. good luck

For the past few years, there has been a class offered in the Cincinnati area where you can become registered for both OHSAA and ASA in one weekend.

I haven't heard details about this year's class. Maybe you could do a web search and come up with something. This is a good way to up and running in the shortest amount of time.

If you're serious about doing ASA I would recommend attending the ASA National Umpire School this February in Zanesville. Info can be found on the Ohio ASA website.

Good luck!

First of all, thank you Nick for helping out with our sport. Without people like you and bretman it doesn't happen.

Secondly, why won't the sanctions please put more effort into getting the information out there to recruit umpires? We can't play without them. they should be running threads on OFC.

Thanks for helping me get info, just had my first class, last Sunday. We hit the ground running, only 6-7 weeks left. Can't wait to do my first assigned game. I agree with you about more advertising here on OFC for new umpires. They will get more participates if they put a thread on OFC.

I'm taking the classes as well in Middletown, more for my personal knowledge, than income. My DD is a freshman and I don't plan on missing any games.

Cool, I also don't want to miss any of my sisters college games. I thought it was time to move up, and It seems like scheduling should be pretty easy thing in my association, to go around her games and my college courses.

A quick follow-up about the umpiring classes I mentioned earlier...

This year's class dates have just been announced. There will be three separate weekends when this class will be held in different areas of the state.

Same deal as before- this class will allow you to get registered with BOTH OHSAA and ASA in a single weekend of classes.

Feb. 23 & 24: Cuyahoga Falls

Mar. 16 & 17 Tipp City

Mar. 23 & 24 Cincinnati

Update: Only three meetings left, till I take my test. I did not know that the test is actually open book. I got to take a quiz for Ohssa which did not count but it was tough. It was finally nice to know some of the rules that I was not sure about in the prevous meetings. I also got to go to the west central ohio local umpire meeting. They went over some new rules and went over how to deal with coaches. I got to meet my mentor tonight also. I want tthe games to start already. I will hopefully be assigned my first games in the next couple of weeks.
