Not sure I would have changed much of what we did. Most likely I would delegate team responsibilities a little more for stuff like fundraising, hotels, accounting, uniforms etc. to parent volunteers.
My wife and I were blessed to have many years of good times meeting new families and friends when DD was playing.
Our oldest DD was 18 when younger DD started playing so she worked and took care of the dog most weekends but would go to one or two events usually Nashville, Chicago or Pigeon forge type tournaments. Yeah, there was the occasional bump in the road but overall it was a good experience.
We were able to make most weekends vacation weekends and when she started traveling more out of state we were getting to locations a day or two early or staying a day or so later to relax. (Really nice this time of year in the Tennessee events or summers in Chicago).
(It was also a different time in the sport).
I feel for todays parents... tournament cost have doubled and in some cases tripled, entry fees for fans, hotel stay to play, parking, no tailgating at a lot of the parks etc. Having more than one kid playing a travel sport in todays environment can hit the family budget hard and in some cases mom goes one way and dad goes the other trying to stretch their kids sporting dollar and attend as many events as they can.
