Whats the best ( worst ) excuse you have ever had from a parent about why their dd wasnt practicing

This thread is sort of a feed off from another one that was resurrected that I was reading,

Those of us that coach have probably heard it all from moms and dads over the years as to why their dd was always behind the curve and never seemed to be quite up to par with the rest of the team.

What is the solution to get little suzy up to speed? Pratice on your own time. It was always a little funny to me the amount of excuses that the parent and child could come up with as to why their dd wasnt as good as anyone else and who is to blame for it.

I had a young lady pretty much go 0 for the season a while back. The blame naturally was laid up on my shoulders and thats fine I have thick shoulders just lay it on me.

But what was funny was the comment at one of their last tournaments as she went again 0 for the day . I heard her mom in the stands defending her dd by saying . Why dosent the pitcher throw what she has been practicing on hitting. All week long she has practiced on certain pitches and the pitcher hasent thrown one.

That comment to this day haunts me as the worst or best excuse a parent could come up with to protect their dd,s inability.

Please do not mention names or teams thats not what it is about , just the strangest thing you have heard as a coach for an excuse.

I don't excuses for my DD, if she's not doing what she's supposed to I flatly tell the coach and ask the coach to "encourage" her. Being "Dad", my words go in one ear and right out the other. The coach can say the same thing and it'll mean something. Go figure.

I once got "the pitching in travel ball is a lot slower than what she is accustomed to in high school ball and it is hard for her to adjust hitting the slower pitches."

I also got from a pitcher's mom that we called for too many pitches down the middle of the plate ... and she didn't believe me when I told her we didn't have a middle of the plate pitch location in our signals.

This is for a different sport, but I think it is the best I've ever heard.
My daughter plays softball and my son wrestles. I have had the good fortune to coach him the past 5 or so years. I recently had a parent come to me fuming mad a day before the final wrestling tournament asking me why a first year wrestler (not my son) was wrestling at a certain weight instead of her son who has been wrestling for 3 years. Before I could answer, she expressed her whole hearted belief that I was out to get her son, that he will not be wrestling next year, and that he is an awesome basketball player, and that he will be playing basketball next year, and that we'd be lucky to have a wrestling program next year if she has anything to do with it.
After gritting my teeth and wondering how this woman's husband doesn't commit suicide, I explained to her that we had wrestle-offs every other week to determine who would wrestle on the varsity squad and that her son had lost every match he wrestled against the younger wrestler.
After I left her speechless, she accused me of scoring the matches wrong. I then informed her that I didn't even referee any of the matches as I had my assistant coaches do that.
Then she informed me the reason why her son lost was because he is shorter than most kids his age (keeping in mind that the other kid is 2 years younger and shorter than her son.)
After she calmed down somewhat she again reinforced the fact that her son was an excellent basketball player and that he would be playing basketball next year and not wrestling. I left the situation alone at that point but soooooooooo wanted to ask her if his small stature helped in his obvious soon to be basketball carreer.

I've heard this one in both softball and baseball:

"How can my DD get any better if she doesn't get any playing time?"

DUH! You aren't getting playing time because you are not practicing at home on your own time to get better!!! That mentality just drove me nuts... then the excuses about why they were not practicing were just icing on the cake.

OOOPS! Forgot to add that when I asked why junior, missed at least 1 if not 2 practices a week, it was because of basketball practice.

We had a girl receiving the best hitting instruction in the world from her father while she sported an 0 for ????? batting average and leading the team in K’s. You couldn’t help this kid due to the overwhelming support she had at home and she was instructed to NOT listen to us---the coaching staff . We moved her in the batting order and the decision was questioned by her parents as they exclaimed her to be a power hitter. By moving her in the batting order we somehow would be jinxing her and the whole team effort would be lost.

My answer was “she’s not a power hitter but a power swinger and if she doesn’t learn how to bunt she may never get on base.”

I’m not coaching this girl anymore.

I had sisters quit the team half way thru the summer because " We didn't think we'd have to play this much and we never get to take a break." They wanted to quit---but wanted to keep the uniforms because they look so cool. First and only time a had girls quit because they played TOO much. lol.

Its to cold out to attend the indoor practice. That was from Mom not the player.

The other thing I was curious about, but why is it a coaches job to motivate players to play? lol, I don't mind it and I have been asked to do that before myself, but if all 11 or 12 kids need coach to motivate them to play, its going to be a loooooooooooong season. I never had to ask a coach to motivate one of my kids, I kind of felt that was my job.

In football I had a player and mom tell me that they wouldn't be at the game on Sat because they were going to Ceder Point to spread grandma's ashes. I just couldn't come up with a response.

I know a (former) coach who cancelled practice because it was 55 degrees. She read the warranty label on the bat and decided 55 degrees was a deal-breaker for all softball activities.

I wonder which ride they dumped them off from? Hopefully they were sitting in the last row. :lmao:

My son wrestles also and I love that sport. The best thing about it is that there is no one to blame but yourself. I tell my son that he is the one that decides a match. Wanna win.....pin the guy, take him down 10 times, turn him, but do not complain if the match is so close that a single judgement call going against you causes you to lose. I know a soon to be 3 timer whose sole loss is 3-2 and he was called for locked hands (I still disagree.....but whatever). He never complained he just went back to work. That is still his lone loss. He is a junior so he should have a chancee to be a 4 timer (I am counting his win this year, but his weight is weeeeeaaaaaak, everyone went up and down I think to stay a way from him.
