What's the right call?

1 Out/Runner on 1st --- batter hits the ball -- line drive to the pitcher who catchers the ball in her mitt --- the mitt falls to the ground(ball does not touch the ground) --- she picks the ball out of the mitt, throws the ball to first just in case --- first baseman tags the bag, and the runner who was trying to come back to first since she thought the catch was an out

What should have been the call?
***

This is what was called: They called the catch an out --- and the tag of the runner an out --- double play(three outs) --- Yahhoooo --- we run off the field --- the other team comes on the field , but wait ....

Contested because the offense was confused by the umps call of the line drive as an out---- so...... they call runner out, because they said we would have made the throw to second for the force out ---- but the batter was safe, because we couldn't have made the double play ----

ok --- just so you know --- no harm no foul(we struck out the next batter for the third out), there wasn't even a lot of grousing about this, just bewilderment --- now remember to just to be safe the pitcher did throw it to first and the base was tagged and then the returning runner who was on base was tagged --- hmmmmm

:) This is a good one to try to weed a call. I make bad calls so I may be wrong. Ball in flight must be caught and in the players possession. Since she dropped the ball glove and no longer has it in her possession she failed to control the catch. This puts into play the force play at second and first bases since the officials did not declare dead ball or stop the play. Force play takes runner out advancing to first base from the throw and now takes the force off the runner between bases which is tagged out. So all in all with the ball still in play all outs were produced and with 1 standing out should have concluded the inning. Now if the officials had made the call illegal catch all play is stopped.

Did I pass ?? lol

If the ball knocked the glove off the pitcher's hand, then that is not a catch. As soon as the detached glove touches the ground, that is the equivilent of the ball touching the ground.

Also, it is not illegal and there is no penalty against the defense when this happens. So that isn't an issue.

Essentially, we have a batted ball that a defender tried to catch but dropped it. The ball is live and what I would call next depends on where the ball is thrown, who is tagged, what base is touched, etc.

If first base was touched before the batter-runner got here, B/R out (out number two).

If runner from first is tagged before getting safely back to first, she is also out (out number three).

Bad initial call by umpire on the catch, bad reasoning and judgment on the "fix" they eventually came up with to cover their first mistake.
