Where does the box begin and end?

Had this situation in a baseball game. Kid bunts the ball straight down in front of the plate. As he is leaving the box the ball bounces up and it hits him in the little gray area in the picture. Ump calls him out. Other coach complains that the box extends to the front edge of the box in front of the plate.

I think if he makes contact with the ball while he is still "grounded" in the batters box then it is a foul ball. If he is not in the batters box then it is an out. If part of the batter is "grounded" in the box and touches a fair batted ball, it is a foul ball. If part of the batter's body is in the batters box area but not "grounded" and touches a fair batted ball, the batter is out.

I hope Bretman is easy on me if I am not right......

I dont think I've ever seen someone called out for having contact with the ball that close to the box. It seems like the umpire would have a hard time seeing that play clearly.

Lenski pretty much nailed this one.

If the batter has not fully exited the batter's box, she is still considered to be "in the box". If the ball hits her in the "shaded area" while one foot is still in the box, one foot out- basically, on her first initial step toward first- it would be a foul ball.

If both feet have left the box, then the batter is out.
