Why do parents send kids to school with cell phones?

Why do parents send kids to school with cell phones? I teach in SW Ohio. I think that when a school has rules that forbid students from having cell phones in their possession and the parents still condone the child taking the phone to school the parent should be punished. There are even instances when parents text their children during school and then the parent is upset when the child gets in trouble. Wake up mom & dad, smoke signals were popular when I was young. When we told our parents we would be home at 10 PM, we were home. There was no need to call for extra time.

There are a heck of lot of things worse to worry about then cell phones. Its a freaking cell phone, so what.

I have an idea... how about getting with the times and extending the school day so that kids don't beat their parents home from work. That would go over swell with the union. :p ...and might even reduce the need for a phone.

I said I would never get my kids cells till they were in HS. I caved when I realized most grade schools and HS's in our area have no payphones anymore. The kids stay after for sports, and the offices are closed. And I needed to know that my kids can call for a ride or whatever they need. So I like the cells at school. I do NOT however condone my kids using them during the school day and if they are caught...they take the consequence!

We also played with mercury lol, no problems with kids having their cell phones in schools. They should shut them off during the school day, but I prefer my 16 year old to have her cell phone with her at all times.

Teachers need to quit ****ing and moaning about petty things and get to teaching. That has to be the profession that complains the most IMO lol, Not saying you, but in general. All I hear from my teacher friends is complaining about kids, well hello you picked a profession in which you deal with kids, what did you think it was going to be like.

Columbine? The school system did a great job on that one!!! Whats the problem with cell phones as long as there not using them? Now if there using them during class than they should be taken away, but they should be allowed for emergencies.

In the locker once they get to school and not out of the locker till the school day ends. The tolerance of us parents and the supposed importance of something that didn't exist until 10 years ago or so give me a break. So their cell phone is more important than learning and education. Call the office they know where they are !!!!!

It is us as parents always defending our children and allowing them to break the rules regardless of how petty they seem that is creating our "do what I ever I want... instant gratification society" follow the rules when it is convenient for me. I bet they can't have it in the batters box.

And no I am not a teacher.

School shooting, abductions or maybe they get with a group after school and are uncomfortable with whats going on. A cell phone could be a life saver yet some teachers get bent out of shape if they just have them in their possession. I have two daughters and I want them to have their phones at all times. One just graduated HS the other is in MS, both say there are only a couple teachers that have a problem with kids having cell phones and they are the grumpy or mean teachers. Maybe they don't like change or progress. Both my girls have good grades and stay out of trouble. I'm not going to stop them from having their cell phones because of a school policy that is as stupid as the "zero tolerance" policy. JMHO

Have it but don't use it. If you use it and it gets taken away, oh well

At our intermediate school (5-6) the kids can bring cell phones to school as long as they give them to the principal at the begining of the day. The Jr. and Sr. High school kids can have their phones on them as long as they are not using them during class. Three of my kids have cell phones and that is how we keep in touch. I can't get out of the house much right now and the phones come in real handy.

I also have 3 kids that have one. The youngest is not allowed to take it to school because I say so. The middle one doesn't like to take it to school. I think she is afraid it will get lost or stolen, and my oldest never leaves home without it. His schedule with basketball and lifting for football changes a lot. I like him having it to know what time his activities are over. I am also a cheerleading coach and I use it to relay messages to the girls. They check it after school when we have activities to make sure nothing has changed. As long as they are off during school I see nothing wrong with it, but I wouldn't advise my kids to keep it in their locker or it may not be there when they get back to it.

Perfect scenario as to why she has one: Ok so track is scheduled from 345 to 500 but at some point during the day the coaches decide they are going go to another school and practice. So they won't be back until 600. Are you as the teacher/coach going to out of your time in the day call every parent and make sure that they know the time change so they don't panic when they come to pick up their child at 500 . Or how would you like to be the coach that has to sit with the kids for 45 extra minutes after the bus gets back because the kid had to wait to use the phone at the school to call their parent to come get them. I could go on and on. But I see no reason for it to be on during the day except possibly lunch. It couldn't hurt anything then.

I do not condone them using their phone during the day. It should be shut off and kept in a purse or duffle bag or whatever. I was not going to get my daughter a phone until HS until she started track last year and we ran into last minute schedule changes as mentioned above. So she got one in 7th.

Also with all the "bad" stuff that can go on as others have mentioned I think it is a good idea to have. If something happens you know that as long as a cell is on it can be tracked. Makes me a lot more secure in this day and age with the weirdos out there. I would have a major problem with a school with that rule. Luckily we don't have such a stupid rule.

As soon as the school can demonstrate the ability to be able to contact me, at a moments notice, when my child is in distress, then I would follow a "No cell phone" policy. So far, no school seems to be able to proficiently demonstrate this requirement.

Our school has a "No Cell Phone Use" policy. This still gives the kids the option of being able to contact thier parents if something happens. If they are caught using it during school, then it is confinscated and the parent can retrieve it at the end of the day. The student also recieves a detention.

If the school wants cell phones out of the school, why did they remove the pay phones? I've been in over 40 schools in the past 2-3 years and haven't seen a pay phone yet. In fact I don't think that I've seen one in 10 years. Once a school can prove without a doubt that they can control the school and provide 100% safety (that includes the bus) for my children then they will leave them at home, until then they will carry them but keep them put away and silenced.

I have no family in Ohio. If there is an emergency, my kids need a way ,beyond the ever reliable High School staff to contact us.
