Well with tv stations switching to digital, there will be more air waves to clog up with those pesky cell phones being used in an emergancy.;&

My dd has one and it comes in very handy, her high school softball coach send all the girls a text as to what time pratice is or if it is canceled for some reason or other. They all get the same message.they don't have to rely on one person to try and get a message to each girl and not missing anyone.
It has become part of our every day life to have and use.
How many people now use there cell phone has the home phones. They have said goodby to ma bell.

If you are a Honer Roll student you it should be on your privlege card. Keep up with the times, good kids should not be ruined by unrealistic rules.

I have two DD's, one in the 6th grade and the older in the 8th grade and neither has a Cell Phone at this time. Both are in sports and the oldest DD uses her friends Cell to contact us after practice or a Jr. High game so that we can pick her up afterwards.

As a parent I see no problem provided the Phone is used properly and on Silent or Off!

Within the last year at the H.S. where the oldest attends there has been 1 sexual assault on students by a female coach during school hours, and by one music teacher at the Elem. where the youngest attends just a few weeks back, it getting a little out of hand here locally. The coach ended up in Federal District Court and lost, now I hope criminal charges are pending on her, the other is Administative leave for now.

I see in the future that my two DD's will carry a Cell Phone even if they must hide them in the event should something like this were to happen to them. All they have to do is dial 911 that was they don't even have to talk, they'll be found by Law Enforcement.

As a coach however! I see a problem, they do cause a distraction at practice, games, and team functions. For instance: There was a player on the team last year during game time in the outfield with her Cell Phone. Punishment:Two Game Suspension! But generally the girls will turn their phone off or on silent during practice or games and do not use them until afterwards so we don't have an issue.

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

Well, I saw this topic yesterday and figured it might get HEATED...but it's actually been pretty calm, LOL I am both a teacher and a parent of four. I teach 2nd grade, so cell phones (at least at this point) are not really an issue. My two oldest children (soph, 8th) have cell phones and take them to school. Like most other parents have said, I want them to be able to get in touch with me whenever (emergency). As a teacher and parent, I absolutely support no texting (calls) during class, they should be set on silent and in a bookbag/purse. Anyone who has ever had to give a presentation or run a meeting, knows how frustrating it can be when cells are going off or people are texting (it's just rude), but during lunch, before/after school...who cares. Our school's policy is, if it's out and you get caught it's taken away and a parent has to come and get it. First time is a freebee, twice you get detention. I think most kids are pretty good about it, and yes, my DD has had hers taken away and yes, we HAD THE TALK. I do hope that parents take a look at their kid's ussage though, as you might be surprised to find out what hours they are actually texting and how much. To my surprise, DD was texting during school hours, just about every hour of every school day! I was trying to figure out how she was doing it! Now as a parent or teacher I don't think anyone would disagree that texting just to text during the school day, can not be educationally productive....so, enter Parent Controls....yeah! Now she can only text to "safe" numbers (my husband, myself, her brother) during restricted hours (i.e. school hours and from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am). Teachers and parents need to try and see things from both sides...we both have jobs to do and we need to respect each other, not tell each other to "get over it". There are extreme cases on both sides, and that's what always causes the issues.

My oldest DD just graduated HS in January (early). She now admits to texting in class a few times. She said she would just let her arm hang down to the side and text with her thumb. She doesn't have to look to text. Kids! She never skipped a class and received good grades. I can't say either so who am I to judge! :D

You have got to be kidding me. Punish a kid for having a cell phone at practice and let them go in school. i think that most of you are missing the point. A cell phone is a distraction item. if students have them on their person during the school day, they WILL use them. Students are in school to learn and to respect the rules put forth by others.

man, I'm sooooo lucky the district hasnt banned OFC or Yahoo fantasy football!

the other day, i forgot to minimize my screen after recess and lunch was over and i think some of the kids caught one of BlueDevil's rants--poor kids, they went home and told their parents they voted for a socialist and ripped down my Malcolm X poster, ran through the halls, started speaking in tongues and joined a community of repubs down here in whitehall (thereby doubling their membership) and vowed to stop the flow of "marxist, communist, pinko whackos" in office...gotta love them children!

Ask my players what happens if your phone comes out of your bat bag during practice. . .LOL, Let's just say it doesn't happen right Duckie?

It's the same thing with school. If my kid that is a junior text me it's for a good reason and it is between class or during lunch. My oldest was given a detention last year for looking at the time on her cell phone. I threw a fit on this one. I showed the school administrators her cell phone logs online and there were not any text (incoming or outgoing) nor calls (incoming or outgoing) during the entire school day. She was merely checking time because she was doing the PSEO with Tri-C and had to be there for a class and when nature calls. . .Needless to say the detention was dropped.

OK, this is way to funny. Daughter just texted from school. She is feeling nauseated and heading to nurse. Then I get a call from the nurse that she is throwing up and needs to come home.

I guess I get to spend the day on porcelain god duty.:yahoo: I welcome all assistance in the rinsing of the bowl!

I believe that some proof is in order. I believe that Mrs. wgman21 only posted once using my screen name, and it was about the manly subject of our cat!!;&

I am an 8th grade teacher with a 9th grade daughter, and I have no problem with kids bringing the phones to school. I have a problem with parents not supporting ANY attempts to make kids follow some simple rules. I am expected to get kids to pass Achievement tests, which is hard enough to do and exceptionally hard when they are more interested in looking at their phone to see who has been texting them instead of paying attention in class. Try sometime to teach your daughter to hit a softball when she is distracted. Often it is the parents themselves who are sending the texts to their children and they are not important message.
Simple rules can solve the problem if Parents support the rules at home.
1.Phones can be kept with you but must be turned off while in class.
2.NO using any picture/video functions while in the school building. I really don't care if they video me, but wait until someone videos your kid in the restroom or the locker room and see how you feel.
These only work if the parents support the schools when students violate the rules. I personally check my daughters phone randomly and if I see that she has been texting friends during the school day, she loses her phone (aka "her life"). BTW my phone gets turned off at 8:00am and turned back on at 3:00pm every day. And for those of you worried about my use of the internet during the school day, just like at your job, I get a lunch break.

Is this "plan" period a time to "plan" what your next OFC thread is going to be about? :lmao:
