Why do parents send kids to school with cell phones?

Have it but don't use it. If you use it and it gets taken away, oh well

I have 2 kids (2 in high school, 1 8th grader). All have their phones on them at all times in school. My husband and I both work. I have irregular hours (often kept over past my scheduled "ending" time) and my husband travels out of town a bit. They can reach me any time and vice versa through texting which is checked between classes & at lunch. I agree to them taking the phones to school WITH the understanding that if it is out and confiscated by the teacher then they deserve it. If it takes me 2 weeks or so to get around to going to the school to pick it up, oh well.

They are kept updated on my schedule changes, their dad's schedule and they also update me on practice changes, after school plan changes, etc.

Last year a local school had an incident where a teacher's estranged husband entered the school. He shot and stabbed the teacher in front of her fifth grade students. We decided that our dd would keep her phone on her but off. In the event of a hostage or some other situation she would have a way to communicate with us.

Last year my dd texted me that she was really sick and needed picked up from school. When I went in to pick her up, the office lady says to me "how do you know she's sick? She never came down here to call you". I said, can you just get my kid? Lol

She proceeded to tell me that if dd was using the phone in school and was caught they would take the phone and give her detention. I just kind of chuckled and told her, you guys do what you gotta do. Kids have to learn the consequences of their actions. I'm cool with whatever happens to her if she gets caught with the phone. I just can't believe she wasn't smart enough to go down to the office after she texted me and have the office call me.:lmao::lmao:

Come on, there's nothing like watching a student text during class. Better yet, it lends credibility to our education system when little Johnny takes a picture of the exam during first period and then sends the pictures to all his friends!

Our school's rule is to put cell phones in your locker before school starts. If seen during the day, the phone is taken and the student spends a day in, In School Suspension. What I think is funny is when mom can't wait to say hello and the student gets In School for answering thier mothers text!:lmao:

Since my dd has been in high school there have been three (3) bomb threats, I don't know about you I WANT to be able to get a hold of my dd. and like we have talked about (me & dd) if she gets caught texting then, OH WELL!!!!, that is something she is going to have to deal with if her phone gets taken away.

Our school has undergone extensive training for disaster/hostage situations. Every mandatory clinic I have attended insists that multiple cell phone calls is the worst possible scenario in these situations. The worst thing is to have the airwaves clogged.

well I hope the teachers are being trained by THE Chuck Norris or Steve Segal and are wearing kevlar with moves like Neo from the Matrix.

better safe than sorry. Simple.

If they use it and get caught then they know what will happen. I don't think the sschool can search every kid every day. Just deal with it and go on.

Why do parents send kids to school with cell phones? When both parents have to be at work before the bus picks up two teenage girls it is a good peice of mind that they got on the bus.....

One of my dd's did the same thing, a few times. I would just go to her school and tell them she had a doc or dentist appointment. The ex caught on and told the school not to let me call her out, a wicked broom on that one. Did it a couple times after anyway and the school never caught it. So I don't look too bad, my dd had A's and B's and just graduated HS in 3 1/2 years. :D

ooh, ooh, can I join this one?

as a teacher myself, we need to catch up to technology...my deal is, u can have any electronic device u want, but once it gets stolen, or it causes a distraction, don't say i didnt warn you....I teach 4th, and i know there are 4 or 5 kids that have them in bookbags, maybe 1 of those is carrying a phone that doesn't work, just to show off...still, if its not on while i'm teaching, cool mo dee...now of course i cause a ruckus cause i dont even ban gum chewing...I'm happy the little thugs dont riot, how do i have the time to check for gum...with low test scores and attendance in the tank, and u want me to hand out detentions for gum? whatever

anyway, back to cell phone..

my DD is 16, and she carries hers all day...she does text me during the day...and its hard to get her not to do so for fear of getting it taken up...i even send her a text from time to time (yes, while kids are workign on assignments in class...shudder!)...when pick central was going through all these bomb threats (and boy, what a story that is), i wanted to know if she was okay....

teachers in the upper grades should adjust to cell phones somehow...plus, if u r that boring, we need to make changes in the curriculum, simple as that...or woek on your management system...if kids are abusing their privilege in class, write them up., if ur building prinicipal wont back u up, move to another school (luckliy we have a union, but i dont see it lasting long these days)..

anyway, kids have changed and sometimes we teachers need to adjust to...there are bigger battles to win than gum and cell phones

oh, thanks mrs. ringer for not whipping me with your conservatism!

I wish someone would take my cell phone away. &#*$ thing goes off all day long.

The wife called me on it the other day (during a meeting) and said she got in trouble by her boss for receiving a text from my daughter (at school). :lmao: Told her to tell her boss, that "this was just a fluke, my husband pays a lot of money for it and I never carry it...just ask him".

To think, when we were kids our teachers main concern was to catch the criminals in the bathrooms dragging on smokes. Now they got this contend with...when will it end.

i support good teachers and practical, proactive discipline...of course, me being the only guy in a sea of women does make my ideas sorta radical...i know i tend to get under some of my colleagues skin..i just dont have as much fun doing so as i did before...i do care about what they have to think, i just work on seeing both sides

Earlier this year there was an incident at my dd's school at around 8 am. By 8:30, parents were ringing each others phones; someone heard over the scanner that police and ambulance services were in route to the school and the school was in lock down. Do you know what runs through your mind at that point? Finally around 9 we got a text from our dd letting us know what happened and she was ok. We didn't received notification from the school as to what happened until around 10:30. I can't imagine having to sit around for 2 hrs. hoping the school didn't call because you knew if they did, it was your child being taken to the hospital.

I'm not the biggest fan of cell phones, but they are an asset in certain situations. Our school has a no use during class policy that I'm fine with. If they don't follow the rules, make them suffer the consequences. If they do follow the rules, leave them alone.

Can you realy clog the air waves with cell phones. Would only be..... maybe 200-300? I've used my cell phone in the Horseshoe watching the Buckeyes. There is 100,000 people there. No problems.
