Can it get any stranger than this. Pat Murphy declines the head coaching job at LSU after a huge acceptance press conference and stays at Bama.

Rumor is that UA increased there monetary offer to $450,000 per year.

I was a huge Pat Murphy fan but this really undercuts my admiration for him, especially if it is about money. Then what if LSU comes back with an offer of $600,000 now? Does he go back to LSU?

Actually, once I make that commitment to LSU, no, I don't leave for a $260k pay raise. I might ask Alabama for that raise before I commit to LSU, but if they say no, then once I commit to LSU that's it, I'm gone.

The only thing I would say on Murphy's behalf is that there could always be something we don't know about that he can't reveal. I don't know if he's married with kids? Maybe his kids simply broke down after he agreed to move to Louisiana or something like that and it gave him second thoughts.

I don't know what I would do in exchange for $260k in extra money. I just thought that Pat Murphy was above chasing dollars at the expense of the just-created excitement in the LSU program and his reputation for honoring his commitments. Leverage away with Alabama while you are in talks with LSU, but to commit so publicly and get the LSU program so excited about the changes and then change your mind because Alabama dangles more money . . .
