Pick-up players for ASA

ok - I have been around this issue here and in Texas but I want to make sure where we are with pick up players. Can someone tell me exactly what you need to do say, for example, if a rostered ASA player wants to pick up with another team on a wkd her team has off. I would think the team that has her rostered would need to drop her before the tourney and then the team she is picking up with would add her to the roster and then drop her and she is added to the original team. If this is right, and you do not have insurance through ASA - do you call Warren Jones to do this? Any help would be appreciated.

From what I have been told your roster isn't final until you go to nationals.
Now the insurance is another animal all together. If her other team got their insurance from ASA they could bring their card with them.

Murph, I think you need to distinguish between ASA Championship Play (that is a tournament that is offering berths to Nationals) and other play. There is some question, which I will be researching today, whether a guest player who participates in ASA Championship Play can be released back to her normal team. I have some urgency in getting to the bottom of this, because we had invited one guest player to Dayton Metro this weekend but we'd be horrified if we somehow screwed up her eligibility. Clearly if I don't come out with an answer that leaves her protected, we will simply play with 10 rather than 11.

Yes well we are in the same boat. so if you play for a team that is playing in an eastern nationals qualifier, then can they be released back? That is our question.

if you qualify they become sealed on your roster. last year we had a 16u player that played for our 18u team qualify by winning Compuware at 18u. she was no longer eligible to be on my 16u roster for ASA qualifeirs or Nationals or any other ASA roster. Easterns - don't matter. just the big one.

Thanks, Dave. So the only one that matters is the National championship. (ASA Nationals). Otherwise, you can pick up players as guest players - right?

If your a sub playing its a national qualifier, and the team your subbing with wins it, you're stuck with that team. I just went through that. We just didn't win the qualifier.

I'd check with your ASA rep.

D. Player Eligibility.
01. Player Participation....
02. Rostered Player.
a. A player may participate as a regular rostered player on only one team
within a division in championship play during a season.

Championship play definitely includes Qualifiers to USA/ASA Nationals, USA/ASA Nationals themselves, Local association championship, and Regional (i.e. eastern) tournaments.

IMU that qualifiers to Regionals are not championship play. Similar to qualifiers to your local association championship (i.e. ASA State) is not championship play. Have to be careful though. Have to be sure that there is no USA/ASA nationals berth available in addition to the berths to regionals.

Can a player move to another team during the same season ?
The answer to this can be complicated. It depends if the roster has been signed by an ASA official or not. So long as an ASA official has not signed the roster, the roster is NOT official and players are allowed to move
at will. Once the roster has been signed, the team must follow ASA Code in regards to roster moves. Here are the highlights:

A player can move from one team at the same age level and classification to another team with consent from the first team. A note or e-mail must be attached to the rosters of both teams stating the move.
Teams cannot pick up players from teams that are still eligible to play in Championship Events (National Qualifiers, States, Regionals, or Nationals).

A player can play up in age classification and return to the original age classification in the same season. I.E. A 14A player can play for a 16A team and then return to the 14A team

What is the Official ASA Roster ?
The Official ASA Roster is the ASA form that the MAJOASA along with other ASA states use to verify a team's roster in order to play in a tournament. The roster must be completed on both sides and then signed by
a Deputy JO Commissioner, Local ASA Commissioner or the State JO Commissioner. Once the roster is signed, players are now officially on that team's roster and cannot move to another team at the same age level and
classification without approval from the coach. In order for the roster to be signed, a copy of each player's birth certificates must be included.

What is the process to add a player to the roster ?
If the roster has not been signed by an ASA official, the player can be added in the same way you filled out the roster to begin your season.
If the roster has been signed, you will need to complete an ASA Pick-Up Player Form and have it signed by an ASA Official. You may only add three players once the roster has been signed.

A player cannot play down in age classification even though they are age eligible. I.E. A 14A player that is 12U eligible cannot play down to a 12A team.

A player can play up in team classification but cannot return to the original team classification. I.E. A 14B player can go to a 16A team, but cannot return to the 14B team for the remainder of the season.

Makes sense. Just talked to Warren Jones and he told me exactly what you just said.

Known Warren for a long time. He knows his stuff. Just wish you could call OHSAA and get the same response.

Thought that if the sub's team hasn't started play, she plays for a team, they can drop her from thier roster, she goes with her team as thier season starts and she can never return to the 1st team she subed for?

Here is the section of code from ASA that governs this:

Section 06 says no player may be picked up for National Qualifiers (ie, our Dayton Metro this weekend) -or- Territory Qualifiers (I believe this to be the ENQ's - right?)

Teams cannot pick up players from teams that are still eligible to play in Championship Events (National Qualifiers, States, Regionals, or Nationals).

So - if a player plays in an ENQ and wins - and the team accepts the berth - intends to play in the National Qualifier - all players on that roster are locked and can not be pick-up players - correct?

But, can they be released from the team and go to another team for the remainder of the season. For instance, they leave the team they qualified with?

My undestanding is after you are red lined, you are locked to that team. I will have to check to see if you can be released after you are red lined. I don't think so, but I will have to check that one out. I know you can't go back to a team that releases you.

Oy ve. Fortunately we are set with our regular roster for Dayton, but we were going to pick up a player for Cincy Doom. We've already qualified for Eastern Nationals, so that adds another wrinkle.

Gotta love the quality of ASA play, gotta hate the difficulty of discerning ASA regs. And I'm a lawyer used to reading regs . . .
