Pick-up players for ASA

My undestanding is after you are red lined, you are locked to that team. I will have to check to see if you can be released after you are red lined. I don't think so, but I will have to check that one out. I know you can't go back to a team that releases you.

Exactly. . .once you've qualified, red lined, the roster is set other than for pickup players. I took two pickup players to Northern Nationals last year to cover spots where players could not make the trip.

2010 ASA Code Article 503 Pick Up Players is very specific on how and when you can pick up a player. Basically you have the right to pick up three players throughout the year. The manner and who you can pick up is in the details. Too many possibilities to go over.

Article 503 Section A Number 06 reads "No player may be picked up for National Qualifiers, Junior Olympic Hall of Fame Tournaments or Territory Qualifying tournaments."

My recommendation is to go to your local ASA commissioner for your ruling before you pick up a player to make sure you maintain your team and the person you are picking up ASA eligibility.

I talked to Warren Jones tonight to work through an issue we are having. He was extremely helpful, and here is how he explained it.

There are two seasons - qualifiers and national tournaments.

Once a player is on a roster for a qualifier, that player CAN NOT play for another team in a qualifying tournament - even if the first team that they played for did now win that qualifier.

Once a player is done playing in qualifying tournaments, and their team has NOT qualified to play in either ASA Nationals or an ASA Regional National, they are eligible for be added as a pick-up player for a team that is going to an ASA National tournament (ASA Nationals or ASA Regional Nationals, i.e. ASA East).

Thanks Warren.

Short explanation - NO pickup players for qualifiers.
