NSA State Tournament

The 14u umpiring that I saw was not very good. Bad strike zones, even worse inconsistent zones, had a base ump literally turn his back on the call and call the girl out. She beat the throw by almost 2 steps. Bad call at the plate, dd still has cleat mark showing that the girl never made it to the plate. By the way photographers got the shot and shows plainly girl was out. Also infield fly called after runner standing on first base, ball actually landed in short right field. Umpiring in general I feel has been poor this year. There are some who are very good, its just a shame there are too many that don't or can't make the right calls.

I hate to jump on the sour grapes bandwagon but I wasn't impressed with some of the officiating either. Actually it was one in particular. While officiating home plate he reacted indignant and hostile when a coach asked him to check with the ump by first on if a girl went around on her swing. Another game he was in the field when a girl was obstructed running to first and the ball was overthrown and he refused to give her second base. I know that bad calls are part of the game and that these guys are just human, but I do have a problem with the few who are consistantly bad.

Evil Dad- You have to remember that short right field was still infield on those baseball diamonds...........Heck, deep flyballs were still on the infield ::)

Unless NSA has some bizarre infield fly rule, the rule is that it must be a ball that can be caught with ordinary effort by an infielder. Whether the ball will land in the infield or outfield is not directly relevant.

So if it was in very shallow right field, if it was a high fly ball and the second baseman was playing normal or deep, that could yield an infield fly. It's impossible to say without actually seeing it, though.

Joe--
trust me-- not only did the r fielder not catch it!! the 2nd baseman was no way gonna catch it--

in fact the other coach wanted to know what the ump's "explanation" was --and laughed at my answer--- because he knew she was not "camped under the ball" in right field" he knew she had no shot at the ball LOL ;D

BTW we won-- the ump just didn't wanna admit he was wrong!

(BTW again-- we were on one of those really big fields where the outfielder was on the dirt!) (the same field that didn't stake the bases)

A umpire stoped the clock in the Laser Vs. Irish Game 1 14U when the field crew fixed the bases. The other diamonds from what I understand did not stop the clock. This decision cost the Irish the game. The Irish were up 3-0 at the end of regulation time. This game alone would have change the whole tournament. Lasers went on to win 5-4.

BTW- when they changed the bases it was in the middle of a rally for the irish. They were up 3-0 with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. They had back to back hits with the top of the line up batting. They could have waited until the inning was over. This may have cost them 1 or 2 more runs.

Needless to say I do not see the tournament as rosey as most.

Well no wonder they won.

agreatgame, She did all the fielding & hitting in the games she played, come-on, one player doesn't make a team.

agreatgame, The reason they picked up Sara Phillips is because there #2 pitcher is hurt and maybe out for the year. I forgot to mention that in my post.

wannabe coach:

I read the "well no wonder they won" comment as saying that the Westerville Ice are a strong team without Phillips and they become even stronger with her. It's hard to argue that picking up an All-state Division I pitcher doesn't improve the team.

Looking at your posts you don't seem to like much of anything.

The entry fee was less than any other tournament this year, no price gouging for concessions, great competition and by most accounts a good time.

I gather you lost?

I need to stick my nose where it does not belong - here. You guys do not know how lucky you are to have John and Lisa. Having worked with them years ago I can tell you that they truly care about the teams and work hard to put on the best show possible.

Try this on for size. The Florida NSA A 12u State Championships begin with 12u games on Friday at 8am (15 teams). It is Wedneday night at 10:22 and we still do not have a schedule. I'll take John and Lisa amytime.

Riff Raff, you seem to have a bone to pick with NSA. A more constructive way would be to communicate with John and Lisa to express your concerns with NSA in Ohio. I happen to agree with Stingray Coach.

I met John this year and I have come to appreciate all he does. He goes far beyond what he has to do because he cares. I, for one, appreciate that degree of dedication. I have not met Lisa, but I have crossed paths with John several times this year. I like John.

John and Lisa are great both people, Tealtown on the other hand.............................. well I personally think it stinks. I hated it 2 years ago, even though my team was runner up, and I hated it even more this year, they took pictures of all the teams but mine, my parents were pretty ticked, they have that stupid cooler rule, they wouldnt line the batters boxes, you have boys mounds to deal with, the dugouts aren't covered etc. etc. at least the beer tent was gone this time LOL

What do some people expect? It's a softball tournament for heavens sake and not dinner at the Ritz. As far as a tourney goes, first time there, I thought it was put together very well, good softball played, and is eveything ever perfect? no, but the staff tried their best and were always on the move to a field when I saw them. Some people make it sound like gate Nazis or something. I didn't get charged until late the second day going to the car as there was never anyone at the table when I walked through. as far as coolers, who was checking? never stopped once, even though we only had rags and water.

This was one of the better ones I have seen lately, Nice job Tealtown!

I agree with Hilliard. Tealtown was decent 2 years ago and was far better this year! I think there may be a conspiracy to have States always in one location, because most of the complaints come from one area of the state, and no I'm not from the Cincy area. When it's time to play ball against the best who cares if it's in Tealtown or Boardman, both are nice and both put on a great tourney for States!!!

(1)Our teams picture was not taken.

(2)None of our parents had their cooler checked until sunday, and even then only 2 of them were checked

(3) All of our dugouts were covered

(4) The way we played on Sunday, I could have used the beer tent

And as for John and Lisa, I have to agree we couldnt have two better people in charge. John was at the Bowling Green tournament last month. It had some problems - it was a first year tournament - but instead of being like NE Ohios ASA Director (See the threads about his tournaments on this site) and making excuses John worked with them and even told me that he was going to help them make it a better event.

I am not a big fan of Teal Town. Only half the dugouts are covered. Warm up areas are in walkways for most part. More baseball fields than softball. Now with all that being said If you dont appreciate the job John and Lisa do then you havent been around very long.
? ?I wont name names or associations but I strongly believe they do a better job than the others. Do the comparisons and see how good NSA is run in Ohio. I may tease them once in a while but they get my vote.
