Funny Lester. I took my "thorozine" this morning already....

Age thing.. Lester...

Thorozine is used to keep mental patients calm. :lmao:

Lady Knight... three things.

1. They are still playing softball, correct? Whether school sponsored or club sponsored.

2. Sounds like you like the PAID job of being a school sponsored coach.

3. Sounds like to me.. school sponsored coaches are not different than travel ball coaches. Do you not expect commitment from your school sponsored girls?

The answer to the initial question is........If school sponsored, once they play in a game or scrimmage, they can not play with their Select/Travel/Rec team till their school season is completed.

Can not have more than 4 girls from same school outside of June/July time frame.

Mason seems to be one of the few school sponsored teams in SW Ohio. Majority of our games are against club teams.

After one year of Jr. High ball experience - I am really disappointed with both school sponsored & club teams. While the coaches may be certified in CPR, they are totally clueless. It is disappointing to see top notch high school programs & coaches, who seem to care less about junior high ball. If I was the Varsity coach, I would be recruiting quality coaches for both school sponsored & club teams. They obviously are expecting the Select org's to get the girls ready for high school ball, cause most could care less about their junior high programs. When I was coaching Varsity wrestling, I implemented an elementary program & saw that quality coaches were put in place at every level. Just doesn't seem to be in softball.

Saw school sponsored teams where coaches treated it like Rec games where rosters of 16 were all played equally, no matter the outcome or result. My DD played school BB & if they were playing a tough team, may only have 6 girls see the floor. Never have I seen a junior high sport where winning was put at the total bottom by clueless coaches.

Then I saw Club teams that would bring in girls from 30 miles away to pitch. 8th grade girls go home because a better 7th grade girl was playing over her. Too much BS in both situations. I am thinking hard on just letting my DD's run track during the spring, cause the benefit of jr. high ball is pretty sad.....

Travel teams are just that.. programs to get girls ready for their high school programs and further along if the girls wish that and works at it. Worked well at many NE Ohio schools. Strasburg comes to mind.

Club ball in the sense of junior high ball.....it's fun for them. First opportunity as a team.. to play for their school district.

Many Jr High Teams that I saw was absolutely could only be that ... fun

Some were very good if they had a pitcher. Many did not.

Russ' angle is development of a program for the high school program.. like many other sports in jr high like basketball, track etc.... in the JH level. In softball, it just is not there. That is where travel teams come in. Where Strasburg's angle is having travel teams made up of purely kids from the Strasburg area.

Tell me if I am wrong Russ, but I think you are using the Strasburg method with your travel team, Mason Thunder. Personally, I like that philosophy and obviously it has produced champions over a period of time.

Many travel coaches talk about how a girls swing might be off when she comes back to him for travel ball.. because of the slow and sometimes terrible pitching of some JH pitchers. Timing is off because they have been swinging at these slow looping pitches in JH.

I don't see JH softball being like the other JH sports no where in the near future. Right now it is fun for them.

So if you are just having fun.. then "club ball" status your team so your better players continue to get better through their travel ball coaches and can practice and play with them in the Spring.

Therecan't be no worse feeling for a travel ball coach than to finally watch the weather break in the Spring for some outside work with your girls... and you got only a few that can come to practice .. because of some thought of school sponsored ball.

If I am a parent, I am fine with my DD playing "club ball" in JH as I know she gets to continue playing for her real teachers of the game.. her travel ball coaches ... while playing for some sort of school pride with the local girls and having fun.

Ohio is not ready for Junior High school sponsored softball. The mentality is not there.

Well I'm not sure how you expect the "mentality" to get there unless it actually starts, is supported, and has a chance to develop.

I as HS coach am in total control of my JH team and present at most of their workouts so they are learning the way I want it to be taught. In two years it has made a huge difference!! If it were a straight "club" team they would be doing whatever with a parent more than likely as a coach. My JH coaches last year was a former player of mine, with the help of one of my former varsity assistants and they worked them hard. I can't recall how many of the HS teams coaches complimented my JH team and coaches. I guess we are the exception...and proud of it.

And we will likely field a 7th and a 8th grade team this spring.

Thanks for all the input. I just find it unfortunate that the OHSAA is regulating when a 12/13yr old can play softball.

I wish a few more Varsity Coaches would take your attitude with their softball programs............

@ Oiler - They do it with every other sport that is played in school. Just wish the school districts would step up & do the proper jobs........

(no practice after 2/21 and no games till scholastic season is complete.)QUOTE]

As a travel and HS coach I would like to add one more note to this just so you are clear. A girl is not considered to be an interscholastic team member until she has played in a preview, scrimmage, or game.
All Ohio Schools can?t do any of those before March 18th.
This is the day they can no longer practice with non-interscholastic team.
First day of coaching does not make them an interscholastic player.

Individual sport instruction at any time, is permitted.

2011 IMPORTANT DATES
February 21 First Day of Coaching Pitchers and Catchers Only
March 7 First Day of Coaching
March 18 First Day H.S. Preview Permitted
March 28 Season Begins

Taken from: http://ohsaa.org/sports/sb/girls/Manual11.pdf

Side note: HS Baseball as of last year (2010/2011) has left it to schools and their BB coaches to stop boys from seeking individual sport specific instruction during HS baseball season.

OHSAA did move the end of the season date back to May 25th for 2012.

4.22) There is no limit on the number of softball squad members from the same school participating on the same squad during the period beginning Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend (May 25, 2012)-July 31, 2012 provided the players have concluded their school season.

I don't see them doing just yet, Russ. I just don't.

It would take OHSAA and actual league representatives to get it rolling.

Lady Knight.. don't you play in a league that IS NOT formed by your actual league that your HS is in?

If I am correct, it took an individual to start a league in Marion for JH... and it wasn't done through OHSAA or a league representative. Just someone who seen the need.

I mean... if you are a school sponsored team and playing in something started by an individual ( and not a league like the HS has).. aren't you defeating your purpose ?

Then it comes down to the only distinction is "school sponsored" playing in a non sponsored league? Then it comes down to money.

Half these school districts down this way can't bus kids to school.. let alone take them to a Jr High ballgame in a non league sponsored event.

I think many also look at the coaches who might be teaching them at the JR High level and their experience. Many would be just teacher looking for an extra paycheck. Is that what parents want for their DD? I wouldn't think so.

Yep no reason to approach the school to try and get a school sponsored Jr. High program. Make a club team and your life will be much easier. We play school sponsored teams and non-school sponsored teams as a club team. Arcanum, hadn't had a Jr. High team the past couple of years because nobody wanted to do it. But now my younger DD is in 7th grade so I'll have to fire a team back up along with another good travel coach who's DD is in 8th grade.

You guys still play softball in Arcanum?

I believe that OHSAA changed the rule for 2012 and the February 20, 2012 date now applies to everyone, not just pitchers and catchers.

Does this mean that a travel team can have an unlimited number of players from the same high school on the team?

You could always have an unlimited # from June 1 - July 31 in any sport.
They have just added a few extra days to this. But only time they can practice or play with these unlimited #'s is during this time.

I was thinking of the number of players a high school coach can coach in travel. Four, right?
