I was thinking of the number of players a high school coach can coach in travel. Four, right?

A high school coach can not coach any of his teams players in travel outside the 10 contacts he is allowed during the June/July time frame.........

He/She is allowed 10 contacts with the entire team during that frame.

The 10 days of contact is for the whole team practice or tryouts for example. The Exception to Rule 4.9 of the OHSAA Sports Regs allows a high school coach to coach players from his/her high school team from June 1 thru July 31st or until the squad is eliminated from the National Qualifying Tournament as long as the 50% rule is observed. this is where the number of no more than 4 players from the same team comes into play.

June 2011 regarding OHSAA Changes:
Change in START DATE for Practice!
As all coaches know, there has been a staggered start date with Pitchers/catchers beginning 2 weeks before everyone else. Effective the 2012 softball season, the start date for practice will be the SAME for all players. This start date will be on the start date previously given for pitchers/catchers. There will no longer be a staggered start for softball practice. That start date for 2012 is: 2/20/2012.

?50%? Limitation Ends Earlier Next Year
Sports Regulation 4.5 limits non-school teams to 4 players from the same school outside the season of play except during June & July. Effective 2012, this exception will actually be extended to the Friday prior to Memorial Day. With the number of Memorial Day tournaments, this will permit teams comprised of any number of players from any one school to play without penalty. Again, this begins in 2012.

Game Start Date moved to Allow Additional Saturday
This was passed previously by the board at a recommendation of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association. This will now permit games to be played beginning Saturday, March 24, 2012 freeing up another possible Saturday for doubleheaders.

Future Scheduling Note
In 2013 and 2014, the first game date falls AFTER Easter. This could have an impact on teams that normally take ?spring trips? to non-bordering states if your spring break does not align with those various events. Current OHSAA regulations do not permit teams to miss school for travel or competition to non-bordering states. Keep this in mind for future scheduling.

Yet, just another way of OHSAA putting down the hammer. OHSAA is getting too big and needs to be stopped. Any lawyers out there to see if this is even constitutional?

This is nothing new. Been this way for a long time. Just the way the calendar cycles

Some schools look down on that. I know of a couple that won't look at a girls if they don't come up through the program. The HS coach likes to have control in how and what they are taught just before they get them.

I get it but the coach is just like that, they want everything in their control.
Your right and I agree, play the best players, and take drama out of it.

Us moms and dads can berate middle school and high school ball until the cows come home but the thing is.......

When the DD comes home from school and announces that she wants to play school ball and she is going to try-outs. Whatcha gonna do???

Yep, we parents talk a mean game here on the forum but when the rubber meets the road, DD is playing school ball.

Please don't lose sight that the game is supposed to be fun and kids want to play with their friends. It's a social setting where the instruction from others may or may not give your child a chance to show her stuff while participating with her peers. Leave the decision to play with your child, then as a family decide if it is possible considering the family schedule. Remember, her schoolmates are her social setting for the majority of her first 18 years of life in most cases.

Please look at the big picture before denying a young lady a chance to grow and cast memories that may last a life time.

What ever happened to the attitude "I want to play school ball so I can help my school team and teammates to become better players"?

In junior high, Sammy?

3/4 of these schoold district can't afford to bus the kids to school... and with more and more home foreclosures... it is going to only get worse on tax revenue for property taxes.

I had a wonderful conversation with a coach from Keystone Lagrange just last Sunday. We talked for amost 1 1/2 hrs about junior high ball. As their district is school sponsored and he was asking about the Junior High State Tournament.. to which I had to tell him it was for "club" teams and not school sponsored teams. It would have to be OHSAA sposored if it was school funded teams related.

He is one of those coaches that want to build a program for softball from JH on up for the high school. I commend him for that actually... but the truth of that matter.. all over this state there are districts that have and have not... thus limiting their financial resources to sponsor JH ball.

He was telling me that there are some NE Ohio coaches applying to OHSAA to delete the "contact rule". I hope he succeeds !!!! Time will tell.

In turn, he was glad to see someone offering the JH club team girls a school pride event such as the State tournament we are holding this Spring.. including regionals.

Both of us agreed there are indeed some terrible HS coaches out there that don't have a clue. :D and then some that do and want to build a program.

I commend the coaches that want to build the program. But all of the coaches have to be on the same page, last year our community team was playing indoor against a club team and doing well, the middle school coach was at the game watching the club team and asked what school our girls went to. They are in the same building as she teaches at, nice. Gary Moore from Independance coaches the 10u kids so he gets to know what hes got coming up through the system, and Keystone say no more they prove it every year. Our high school coach is fine just have to get to his level.

I so enjoyed the conversation with the HS coach. Nice guy. WE both talked the pros and cons of Junior High softball, club or school sponsored otherwise.

I explained to him that I thought "club" was the way to go ... as it does not limit travel coaches from their team in the spring because some of his girls played school sponsored ball and can't practice or play with them until the season is over for the JH girls.

I personally think.. there are more travel ball coaches worthy of coaching versus many HS coaches.

Some good ones out there in HS for sure.

Just not enough in my opinion.

Absolutely! I'm talking 4th grade, but I guess I'm just old fashioned. I'm a believer in the concept that it's never too early to realize a teaching moment - something that just may be of value to kids when they become adults. Even more valuable than athletic skills.
