My daughter plays on the team with the catcher who was approached, and I did witness the "incident". ?The coach handed the mother a business card, complimented our catcher(rightfully so), and told her he would like to see her at try-outs. ?I don't know if that means he wanted her to leave mid-season or not. ?Regardless, it is NOT appropriate to recruit during a game in front of other PLAYERS (of either team)! ?Especially, not at the 10U level. ?No matter what you say, 10 Year old girls do not fully understand all of the tactics adults employ, and this sort of thing can create animosity, jealousy, and low esteem amongst an otherwise tight team. ?Fortunately, none of our ?players have voiced any concern. ?It is appropriate to make contact immediately after the game or in between games when other players are not within earshot. ?In my mind, this was poor judgement on Coach's behalf, and he has obviously heard several opinions about it. ?Whether he will change the timing of the approach is TBD.
We have an EXCELLENT catcher. ?She is a natural, and if she wants to move on next year, it is her perogative. ? In an earlier posting, someone cynically commented that the coach "might" want another cather for next year. ?If he wasn't interested, he wouldn't have initiated the conversation. ?You should consider the fact that the "elite" players are not necessarily the best players. ?They're just the best that those coaches could find for the season. ? There always someone better. ?
What is most upsetting about everything I've read is that nobody mentions how the girls feel about this....isn't this game about them? ?Aren't we suppose to be developing them and setting examples for them? ?My daughter has terrific athletic ability. ?She gives 100% each time she hits the field, and she is good. ?But, she is 10 years old. ?She just got out of the 4th grade. ?What were you all doing in the summer between your 4th and 5th grade year? ?Were you worried about which team is trying to recruit you? ?Are the girls playing because they want to, or are they trying to please their parents? ?At the end of the day, they are little girls, all of them. ?Isn't it a parents' responsibility to teach them what good clean competition is about. ?As we all know winning and loosing is a huge part of life. ?They should know what it is like to do both so that they grow into well rounded athletes.
Just my 2 cents!
