Bret, I have an event down here on Saturday and I wanted to ask you if it would be alright to implement your thoughts on the "timed games PLUS one inning" thought process you had awhile back on the OFC.
My problem is with a possible 5 game round robin. You know me, love to play full games.. really do and really our reasons are the same ... but .... in this type of set up ... that puts 2 of the 5 teams entered .... playing 4 in a row.
When you suggested the " timed game / one more inning.. I know it is what as an umpire.. we see at a tournament EVERY weekend. That is ... timed games... and the way the clock is played by the coaches sometimes and then fans/parents are upset thinking the other team is "milking the clock".., blah, blah, blah... when umpires have enough going on if they are doing their job .. let alone doing the same job you was doing in the 2nd inning as you are NOW doing in the 5th inning with three ( 3) minutes left on the clock ... ... when it comes down to game's time management and keeping the flow going from the very 1st inning onward as an umpire. Get teams in the rythem of "on and off the field" as well as helping the umpire .. when it comes to the NORMAL complaint with 3 minutes left ... that one side is stalling, blah, blah, blah ... that YOU , as the umpire of the game can say... "it has the same rythem as the 1st inning coach !!!!"... and usually followed by, " He can go out there and have 1 minute to talk to his pitcher. I know coach ... there's 100 seconds left but he has the right to a conference for 60 of them" :lmao:
SO ......
I , personally, think it is the MOST .. ABSOLUTE ... BEST SOLUTION .. ever thought in the HISTORY of girl's fastpitch tournaments.. FOR the "timed gamed haters" .. such as myself ... and coaches and parents alike.
I think these TD's here in Ohio would be CRAZY to NOT use the format... IF their format is timed games
FROM both sides of it all ... as an umpire or a TD ... that gets to hear this along the way in an event ... I can appreciate the thought of what you are saying.
I am thinking of using YOUR format this Saturday down here in Cincinnati in the 12u division and see what kind of reaction I get from coaches and parents based on the back to back games I mentioned earlier situation I have indeed... as the set-up is 5 games on two fields.
I was thinking about going 1:45 time slots for start times ( as this seems to be what MOST Ohio events are set at ).
I will either use 1:15 or 1:20 ... thinking 1:15 though and USE your method of "timed and one new inning".
So, Bret, lay it out on here... and we shall give it a go down here in Cincinnati this Saturday.
You know you are welcome to come umpire on Saturday. Get a 5th 12u and it'll be 5 games. My umpires from Akron and Canton is coming down and my base partner is THREE. Need a fourth !!!! ;&
You can find a "replacement " for that Saturday game... that I know you already probally have scheduled... and come get your own first-hand reaction from coaches and parents about that set up of YOURS :lmao:
Pays good !!!!
LOL
