Ump called illegal pitch today x2. Explanation was that the pitcher no longer was in contact with the plate at push off she was pushing off the dirt in the hole in front if the plate. Not a crowhop or a replant (foot never left the ground). just saying that she has to physically push off plate with the ball of foot.

What rule set were you playing under? ASA and USSSA have different requirements as to where the pivot foot can start.

Hi, Comp. Good to see you on the forum!

I don't work U-Trip, so will confine my answer to ASA. As long as the pivot foot is in contact- any contact, even a tiny bit of the shoe- with the pitcher's plate it is okay if part of the foot raises of the plate, so long as the other portion of the foot keeps contact with the ground on the push off.

If the pitcher had the back edge of her heel touching the plate, then without moving the foot forward the heel raised up, so that she was on the ball of her foot, I would not have a violation.

There's no rule in the rule book that says you must push off with the ball of your foot contacting the pitcher's plate.

Thanks Bretman,

As for USSSA, FED and NCAA, they all specify a portion of the pivot foot must start on top of the pitching plate. As Bretman indicated, ASA only requires the pivot foot to be touching the pitching plate. Bu, even then, nothing in any of the rule sets require the ball of the pitchers pivot foot to push off from the pitching plate. Even under the other rule sets, as long as the foot is legal at the start of the pitch, it would be legal.

such a judgement call that most umps will not make, even when it's brought to their attention

Thanks Bretman. Umps were overall good at ASA nationals, but the illegal pitch, the safety bag, and the hit batter in the box begged clarification

You do tend to get pretty solid crews at ASA nationals!

Last week I was at the eastern nationals in Marion. Of the ten games I worked, I can't really recall any grossly bad calls. One umpire pulled a bat from a game that I thought he shouldn't have, and you always have a few bang-bang plays that might go either way, or a couple of pitches that are borderline. But, for the most part, you will get the "best of the best" at nationals.

Not only that, but all umpire performances were evaluated and you received feedback after your games. If a guy did have a rule wrong, he probably heard about from the higher-ups afterwards.
