It is my understanding this is not allowed(besides the fact it is very bush league).
Is there rules for asa or usssa against this?I believe there is.But what exactly are they?

Cheering is one thing but "chanting" or negative comments againt the other team is bad sportsmanship which is truely annoying. I have always always always hated "hey batter hey batter.....swing" Some say it's part of the game but I dont hear them saying that when their team strikes out

All these little cheers are annoying as well. Coaches can't hear, umpires have the girls right in their ears at some parks.... coaches and players can't hear the umpires on fair or foul because of this noise .... play ball.. if you want to cheer.. go out for cheerleading.

Play the game to win. I know coaches that DON'T allow their kids to cheer so they can instruct from the coaches box for the batter or the runner, etc....

It's annoying and takes away from the coaches trying to coach. Especially on the offensive end. They are trying to tell the batter something.. the batter can't hear what the coach is saying and then with the rule of keeping one foot in the box at all times.... the runner jumps out of the box and runs down to hear the coach and comes back with a strike on her that she didn't have.

Where does that make sense ?

Wholly cow Quake...if you don't like cheering you better never ump a college game or go watch one. I think part of the recruiting process at OSU is you must know a minimum of five cheers!!

in my years of coaching I have found that the girls when they cheer will pay attention to the game. The girls when not cheering are not that into they game.

Again this is as a whole and not indivduals or individual teams.

As far as I know, its not illegal but an umpire does have the right to stop cheering that is inappropriate or unsportsmanlike.

Nail on the head. We just keep our kids cheering for our players and encouraging our success and not taunting the other team.

I love cheering!!! Like they said, it keeps the girls in the game. We cheered every game, all game at Kent State and all the other teams did as well. I think it is an important part of the game and I assure you, I am NO cheerleader!!! Although I do not like the taunting cheers. All the cheering should be to encourage your team and teammates, not to dog on another player or team.

Holy Cow is right, Quake!! What game have you been watching? Oh my, if cheering/chanting (or whatever you want to call it) annoys you, how did you EVER get into GIRLS softball? It's downright un-American to not let the girls cheer at their own softball game!!! lol! Loosen up, man! Accept it as part of the girl's game... Go put on a Black Eyed Peas tune and shake it a little!! I'm gonna have to find you at a Columbus tourney this summer and have the girls in the dugout make you join them in a cheer! :D

Seriously though, as far as directing decidedly negative "chants" towards ANYONE on the opposing team, it just shows that you disrespect your opponents and the game, and reflects poorly on your team. That negative junk generally goes away in the older ages, especially at ASA showcase tournaments - and it's non existent in the college game.

Just listen to the dugouts during the current NCAA games on TV. What a riot! The cheers are ALL POSITIVE, and it really gets the girls hyped up and into the game. It's what makes girl's fastpitch EXCITING. :yahoo:

Cheering is one thing but the question is are they aloud to direct it at the pitcher?.To distract,in a non sportsman like manner.
We all have heard kids chant for there team and yes I find it annoying but that is part of the game. And chanting at the batter is rec. league level.
But is there a rule against directing it at the pitcher?

In all honesty, it should never happen in a unsportsman like a manner, like making fun of the way a pitcher looks and it would probably tick me off more as a parent, however, it would probably tick my daughter off to the point that she would actually pitch better just to have the last word. Pitching is a mental position. The world and life isn't fair. Make them eat their words thats all I can say.

Final Answer= NOOO!

It would be up to the umpire to give the team a warning on (His) discretion. A team warning is the most that could happen. Yes it is Bush leauge and no it should not happen, but looking at the book, there is no rule. Hope this helps. Play through it, good players learn to just ignore the chatter and play the game, dont let all the other nonsense get in her head.

NFHS rule 3-6-13b says "use of profanity, intimidation and/or deceitful tactics, or baiting or taunting" Punishable by warning if minor and up to ejection.

NSA Article XX section 2 c says "Using any form of intimidation tactics (profanity, baiting, ridicule, etc.) in the taunting of the opposing team and its members." and d says "The use of any behavior that is not conducive to fair play." Also punishable by ejection.

I don't have ASA or USSSA handy, but I would have to guess they have a similar clause someplace.

I would say it would be up to the umpires judgement if it should be decided it was taunting or not. If so, the ump would have every right to put an end to it.

If I was the ump, it wouldn't have to go very far before I would put a stop to it. No need to say anything about the other team, far too much positive they can cheer about their own team.

I do recall an incident when I was coaching and a couple of my kids started something that got my blood boiling immediately and put a quick end to it.
