cheerleading, chanting, being obnoxious...

I was going to take Lady Knights advice but... All I'm going to say after reading luv2catch post is this --- These are 10 - 18 year old girls. This is their game, whether any of them are ever good enough to make it to D1 after high school - who knows - but cheerleading & chanting is part of their game. Let them be kids, let them grow up and make decisions on their own. Let them have fun and still enjoy the game before they have to go out into the real world and wind up like playedout08 - an old bitter person that feels the world owes him something for his miserable existence. Playedout08 - it sounds to me like if you don't care for the way "GIRLS" play their fastpitch softball games than you need to go somewhere else to figure out your purpose in life. Leave the girls alone - go down to Berliner and watch some of the ADULTS play softball. Maybe you'll fit in down there a little better. Between the cursing and fighting with each other I don't think they have time to cheer lead, chant or be obnoxious with their spectators. Take in a Clippers game I'm sure Louseal would enjoy your company for the night. Can't tell from your rambling posts if you are a parent or not - but I sure feel sorry for your children if you are. To do no wrong and not allowed to be a kid, wooo heavy stuff. Good luck to you '08 - What will your screen name be next week ?? I think that you got out of this post exactly what you were wanting. Please clean up after yourself :-* :-* :-* You missed a little on the screen ::)

I'm interested to hear about where people stand on the subject of constant chanting and cheerleading by girls fastpitch teams. ?Personally, I find it obnoxious and irritating. ?It appears that others do as well and are apparently willing to do something to stop it. ?I was at a game recently where a girl who was the leader of all the obnoxious chanting by her team was "accidentally" hit in the ribs by a high hard one. ?Coincidentally, (or perhaps because it was painful to speak much after that) the chanting stopped. ?Hopefully, she and her coach got the message to have a little class. ?Anyone?

If you were watching from the sidelines how do you know this hit was intentional?? Do you have super power hearing?? I have to say that most coaches are not as classless as you!! Chances are this was just a young girl who didn't quite hit her mark. That actually happens sometimes in fastpitch. Oh, I forgot, you are new to fastpitch right??

..and by the way, forcing your 10-16 year-old daughters who pitch and play 3rd base to wear those hideous plastic masks is as close to child abuse as you can get. ?They're ugly and should be outlawed. ?If their hands aren't quick enough or their fundamentals are so poor-- that they are at risk of getting hit in the face, then they shouldn't be out there. ?Too many mothers with too much influence = cheeleading and facemasks. ?
?

My DD pitches and plays 1st and 3rd. ?Yes, she wears a mask (and actually wants to). ?She is not out there to win any beauty contests, PAL!! ?She is out there to play ball. ?Your problem is that you don't have a whole lot of respect for females as athletes. ?Maybe this forum isn't the place for you! >:(

Okay, a couple of comments.

#1 If this thread (and a couple of posters in it) doesn't change its tone real quick it (and a few accounts with it) will be locked. Disrespect of individuals, whether by name, gender, race, etc. will NOT be tolerated.

#2 I'm not a real fan of cheering, but if it keeps the girls focused on the game instead of talking about the party the night before, or the boy in the stands, etc. go for it.

#3 I've seen the GameFace and similar products used at all levels of fastpitch except pro. My thoughts - I'm not going to force anyone to wear one, but if a girl decides that that level of protection is necessary then she has my support - just like I'm not going to tell a plate umpire that he/she needs to wear shin guards and a mask, his/her choice. As much as it looks similar, this game is not baseball - it's a much quicker game, and requires quicker reflexes.

I also have seen game faces in all levels of play except pro. I don't think it looks ugly at all! ;) It does look safe and smart though!! :D

Let's just say that sitting in the dugout can be an educational experience if the game focus is not maintained.

I THINK CHEERING IS OK ,IF THE CHEER S ARE NOT DISREPECTFULL TO THE OTHER TEAM, IF A PLAYER WANTS TO WEAR A FACE MASK, I THINK ITS THAT PLAYERS CHOICE, DEPENDING ON HER POSITION. I THINK THE THIRD BASEMAN AND PITCHER SHOULD PROABALLY WEAR ONE, JUST MY OPINION.

I see alot of cheering in travel ball, but very little in HS ball...Why is that?? ?My HS team had several travel players that would get some cheers started early in the game, and the other teams would glare and laugh at them. ?

The colleges cheer, and to some extent Team USA cheers, so what is the major difference with HS ball?

I will venture an answer to that LK. In alot of cases (as has been discussed here many times :) ) HS teams do not contain alot of travel players. They dont come from that background and hence dont really follow the sport that closely. Parents, as well as these players, tend to think of cheering in the politically correct sense....meaning it is unsportsmanlike. Players and parents at the upper levels of the sport follow the game closer, watch college games on TV, etc. They realize that it is part of the game for most of the girls.

Alot of admins would fall into this category (not following/understanding the sport). Therefore they can take a disliking to it.

Im speaking in generalities of course, but Id say thats most likely why you would experience that response on some HS teams.

Our girls cheer to motivate each other, to bring up a teammate that is down and never direct it towards another team or members of that team, unless an opponent was hurt and then gets up and shakes it off. If that annoys someone, that person is not significant to our game or team. >:(

cheer:
Verb
1. to applaud or encourage with shouts
2. cheer up to make or become happy or hopeful; comfort or be comforted
Noun
1. a shout of applause or encouragement
2. a feeling of cheerfulness: the news brought little cheer [Middle English (in the sense: face, welcoming aspect), from Greek kara head]

There is a BIG difference between cheering and shouting insults at your opponent. I would think in the spirit of the game that any respectable coach would never deny his players the opportunity to encourage, applaud and cheer their team mates.

On the other hand, I would completely lose respect for any coach that encouraged or allowed his team to shout demeaning insults. I think they call that "trash talking" nowadays.

Bring on the positive crazy cheering! :D I think it's a cool part of softball that sets it apart from comparisons to baseball.
