cheerleading, chanting, being obnoxious...

I'm interested to hear about where people stand on the subject of constant chanting and cheerleading by girls fastpitch teams. Personally, I find it obnoxious and irritating. It appears that others do as well and are apparently willing to do something to stop it. I was at a game recently where a girl who was the leader of all the obnoxious chanting by her team was "accidentally" hit in the ribs by a high hard one. Coincidentally, (or perhaps because it was painful to speak much after that) the chanting stopped. Hopefully, she and her coach got the message to have a little class. Anyone?

At what age level are you talking about? And IMHO it's only obnoxious when your team is getting there butts handed to them from the other team . My DD is one of the leaders of her 12U team and if I knew another teams pitcher threw at her on purpose, me & you would be having some words. You all probably laughed it all off and high fived each other - Real Grown Up like Huh? As long as the chants & cheers are positive and not derogatory to the opposing team - I don't find them any more obnoxious than the parents yelling at the girls or umpires from the sidelines ::) ::) ::)

Wow. a) it wasn't my team, I was only watching the game. I don't have a team.
b) I'm pretty sure it was a 12U game.
c.) I didn't see anyone "high five" anyone. It appeared to have been handled in a professional manner.
d.) If you're encouraging that obnoxious behavior, I'd say you'd better get ready to have lots of words with lots of people because there are still a few real baseball people involved in youth sports who do not take kindly to classless loud mouths (whether the loudmouths are winning or not) and will handle it the way it has been handled for decades.
e.) If your daughter has the big mouth, I'd say have lots of ice packs ready because she's going to get hit. That's just the way it is.
f. GOOD BALLPLAYERS DO THEIR TALKING WITH THEIR BATS AND GLOVES.

Ever watch College? Chanting and cheering is part of the game.
What is obnoxious is adults that think it is ok to hit a girl on purpose because you don't like their cheering!!

I agree with you Viper_22 - my DD is the pitcher/leader on our 14U team and I would also be having words with the other coach.
If the chants are rude then address it with the coach or umpire.
We actually had an umpire last season (without us saying anything) tell a coach they could not do one specific chant because of the content.

The parents seem to be the ones here who need to have a little class.

I think we have the makings of a good thread here for a change. I will add that I didn't hear a negative word about anything from any parents on either side during this particular game. All were very well behaved and the umpiring was quite good.

I will say this much ( playedout08, must be new to the game). By reading your (a,b,c,d,e or whatevers) you need to wise up a little if those are your true feelings. ( pak plenty of Ice packs cause your dd will need them)??? What the xxxx are you thinkin. I say if you see this going on you must be in the REC division of your community. In Travelball thats not the way it works. Its like telling my girls after one girls gets hit by pitcher to go out and LINEDRIVE her. Just not realistic. I do believe you could send a message in other ways. Like WIN!! Good luck with this thread but it looks like some people will get offened by comments through the days to come. Also remember ( Its their game let the girls play it like they want) With RULES of course ;D

playedout08: Sounds to me like you have not been around fastpitch softball very long. This is Fastpitch Softball played with girls not Baseball played by boys. There is not a single girl on any team out there that does not know a chant or cheer of somekind. The way you stated your question set me back on my heels. So as I take it you were just a spectator of a game and the girls chanting & cheering for THEIR TEAMS bothered YOU. So why don't the sanctioning bodies of fastpitch change the rules and dictate that no one can cheer for their team because it may offend or bother a spectator in the bleachers. As Viper stated intentionally throwing at a batter is BUSH league, thats not how WE do anything. Now as far as my daughter having a big mouth - My dd team looks up to her as a leader if a chant or a cheer is what it takes to get her team fired up than thats what she'll do. Sure beats that crap out of the baseball chatter - hey batter hey batter hey batter - swing batter >:(

I will add that I didn't hear a negative word about anything from any parents on either side during this particular game. All were very well behaved and the umpiring was quite good.

In other words - Didn't bother anyone else but YOU ;)

chants are a part of the game ---unless rude or in poor taste it is perfectly fine to cheer. From 8u to the college WS --you hear chants, you better get used to it. Recommending a rule change for chants is silly. MD

I personally don't like the chanting makes me crave a walking taco and draws me to the game where all the noise is at......bet I gain 5 lbs every tournament and it's all Johnnies fault.....perhaps we could have fans hold up que cards that says quiet please........cmon.....lighten up.....anyone think coaches spend the last 15 minutes of practice teaching the chants????? The girls come up with it and if it injects some fun into the game...after all it is their game...as long as it is not directed as a negative towards the opponent and they come together as one unit who cares.
Throw a heater at my daughter for chanting and the coach who directed it better be ready for their own confrontation.

i've mentioned something to this kind of thread before...to make a long story short...yes, cheering is annoying, whether your lunch is getting handed to you or you are humbling another team

but, boys are worse...they yell all that "batter batter swing" crap every pitch of every inning...ugh, THAT needs to be banned....i've seen college girls chant tastefully on big 10 network, so for each team its own

Viper, I didn't quite understand the cheerleading and football thing. It would have been on point if the football players in your post had been the ones cheerleading (which they don't do). Clearly, there's a cheerleading influence on some of these girls-- perhaps it's more in their blood to be cheerleaders than to be be ballplayers. I agree, though, that it looks like this particular barn door has been open for too long to ever hope to close it. By the way, the "hey batter, batter" thing is not part of any baseball program I've been around --- except 5 & 6 year-olds--- and my guess is that their MOTHERS or some coach/dad who never played ball told them to say it.

Hey, Miami. Why would you think a COACH would have had to have "directed" a "heater" at your daughter? Because you're one of those people who thinks all girl fastpitch players are just robots for their coaches? They have to be told when to swing, when not to swing, where to play, where not to play, where to throw the ball, which pitch to throw-- high or low in or out? You don't think there are pitchers out there who would dust off your daughter for being a loud mouth on their own? If the chanting is part of the game, so are the consequences.

;DCome to think of it, maybe that's why girls are required to wear facemasks--- so when the pitchers start knocking down the cheerleaders they don't hurt them too badly.

Yeah 08 you are right about the football players not being the cheerleaders for their team. they are too busy smacking each other on the a**. And yeah you're probably right, they don't yell out at any of the other 22 players on the field from the sidelines too encourage them. I suppose that we can get the 10 or 11 girls that are on a team to sit down on the bench sit on their hands and be good little children that must be seen and not heard. Then we can get 8 - 10 little boys from the baseball fields to come over and be the real cheerleaders for the girls but we may have a hard time understanding them because of all the teeth they have missing because idiots like you think that only little girls need face masks. And besides you have to be running out of screen names by now. What is your purpose of this thread anyways? You say you don't have a team then why do you feel the need to keep coming back for more?? The only thing I can think of being more obnoxious than a group of girls rooting on their team mates are people like you that think everyone else should think the same idiotic way as you. :p :p :p

Well put viper, and as for you playedout I believe the best place for you at a softball tourny would be cleaning the port-a-pottys on Monday morning, and gathering up the trash, or is that the reason you are so hateful towards the girls.

Alright Fellas, if I may could I please have this one

Playedout? I will say after this you just might be OUT!! I understand your lack of knowledge towards the game. I respect that. Since you have NO child on the field. The comments you are stating do not make much sense. Yet they are kinda funny for an ignorant man. You must first understand ONE thing, Every pitcher can hit a batter on cue!!! That does not make them a Quality player, and usally they do not want to do it unless forced!!!! Then you have another situation!! Thats when MV14 comes into place. There will be a CONFLICT with the coaches!!! Travel Teams of this level do not want that. Yet it might have to come to that, playing the team you saw!!!! I want you to understand that what you saw was not regular behavoir!!! If you would like to watch a true game of fastpitch ( cheering and all) please feel free to give me a shout!!!!!!! Please!!!! I will show you a true game. I am sure that there would be a few other teams on this site ( Sense I know your NEW) that would entertain you as well!!!! Also could you please tell me who that team was you were watching that did hit the batter???? I will be sure to CHEER so loud that even YOU can hear us!!!!!!

Thanks
Miami Valley Vipers

Sweetheart, this is the only screen name I've ever had.

I don't know a single youth baseball player, nor have I ever heard of one who lost a tooth because he didn't wear a facemask.

...and by the way, forcing your 10-16 year-old daughters who pitch and play 3rd base to wear those hideous plastic masks is as close to child abuse as you can get. They're ugly and should be outlawed. If their hands aren't quick enough or their fundamentals are so poor-- that they are at risk of getting hit in the face, then they shouldn't be out there. Too many mothers with too much influence = cheeleading and facemasks.

Funny, I've been watching the NCAA Super Regional tournaments this weekend and I haven't seen a single facemask on a helmet or on a pitcher or fielder! I guess all the players who make it to D-1 are successful at convincing their silly mothers to butt out.

Most of the D-1 girls play like GUYS. It's strange how that works.
