cheerleading, chanting, being obnoxious...

OK, I will chime in here.

My team,. who has been together for 2 years, do not do organized cheers. As a matter of fact, none of the teams I've had in the past (all age groups - no 10Us) chose not to cheer. Did it bother me when other teams cheered? No. Did I make it a rule that my teams (present and past) to not cheer? No. I leave it up to the team.

The only thing I request is that they pay attention to the team and the team we are facing. If they choose to cheer and chant tomorrow, it wouldn't bother me the least. If the opponents want to cheer, then go for it. I only ask my team to study their opponents.

Are you sure they were not cheering... ??

Sweetheart, this is the only screen name I've ever had. ?

I don't know a single youth baseball player, nor have I ever heard of one who lost a tooth because he didn't wear a facemask. ?

...and by the way, forcing your 10-16 year-old daughters who pitch and play 3rd base to wear those hideous plastic masks is as close to child abuse as you can get. ?They're ugly and should be outlawed. ?If their hands aren't quick enough or their fundamentals are so poor-- that they are at risk of getting hit in the face, then they shouldn't be out there. ?Too many mothers with too much influence = cheeleading and facemasks.....

This just happened last week in MLB....BUT they are just pros so I know their reflexes aren't as good as 12U girls. Moronski.

SAN DIEGO -- Padres pitcher Chris Young left Wednesday's game in the third inning after being hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols.
Young was taken to Scripps Green Hospital in nearby Torrey Pines with a nasal fracture and a laceration on his nose.

Young sat on the ground for several minutes while being attended to by the team training staff and was able to walk off the field on his own, though he was accompanied by teammate Tony Clark and trainer Todd Hutcheson.

Young opened the inning by retiring Brendan Ryan before allowing consecutive singles to Skip Schumaker and Aaron Miles. Pujols then lined an 0-2 slider up the middle as the ball hit Young flush.

At the time of the injury at PETCO Park, the Padres were leading the Cardinals 2-0 after a two-run home run by Adrian Gonzalez in the first inning.

Catcher Josh Bard also left the game in that same inning after suffering a sprained left ankle on a collision at the plate with Pujols.

Hey Played.....have you seen my daughter.........lol.....believe me she doesn't need my help convincing a pitcher not to throw at her again....however, my reaction would be to reinforce to people like you that teaching kids to throw at other players with a purpose in mind is not a wise thing to do.

Chanting and cheering are part of the game......Don't like it go watch a Tennis match! ?Bring earplugs, ipod, or stay in the parking lot. ?You will hear more annoying comments come from the stands than on the field.

The only thing I ask of my team is to be smart on their choice of cheers. ?If we are loosing don't say the cheers like "WE"RE GOING TO BEAT THE WHOOPSIES OUT OF YOU". ?That tells me they are not paying attention to the game. ?At that point it is great to get loud to fire up their team. ?And that is the the TRUTH ;)

Funny, I've been watching the NCAA Super Regional tournaments this weekend and I haven't seen a single facemask on a helmet or on a pitcher or fielder! ?I guess all the players who make it to D-1 are successful at convincing their silly mothers to butt out.

Most of the D-1 girls play like GUYS. ? ?It's strange how that works. ?

This might be the most un-educated reply in the history of OFC . MD

Ringer: There's nothing in that article about a player losing a tooth! While that injury was certainly serious, it was also extremely rare. It happens perhaps once or twice a season (thousands of games). I suspect, however, that the player's mother will urge him to wear a plastic face mask--- after which she'll be told (respectfully) to butt out.

The reality is that there is no chance of making mothers butt out of girls' fastpitch. That ship has sailed. This tournament softball is more of a mothers' activity, it seems, than a girls' activity. It gives the moms something to do, something to talk about, some place to go. From what I can tell, only about 30 percent of the girls on the fields look like they'll go on to make their high school teams. Only about 10 percent will go on to play ball in college. Only about 10 percent of that 10 percent will play division 1.

Those elite players will have to overcome their mothers meddling, no doubt, to get there.

Ok...ENOUGH...what does it take to get people like this gone? ?How many of our dd's have now read about how stupid face masks look? ?How many of our dd's have now seen their mothers being put down? ?Again what does it take?
My daughter is a great softball player, I am not a meddler, and I have nothing but respect for the girls who choose to wear a game face mask. ?It is a personal choice on safety and that choice should not be made on how it makes them look.
My dd also happens to be a pitcher, thankfully she and her coaches have the CLASS to never intentionally hit a batter. ?That is crazy to even talk like that was an appropriate reaction.
Now on to the cheering, as long as the cheers are in good taste...not putting down the other team...what is the problem? ?If you don't like the way a game is...DON'T GO TO THE BALLPARK!!! ?You seem to know that this is done all the way through college and that it is part of the game, so basically what you are doing from what I can see on this thread is just bashing girls sports and women in general. ?Which I don't believe should be permitted on a GIRLS fastpitch softball forum at all.
If you are so unhappy in your life that all you can do is bash moms, and bash softball, and bash cheering, and even bash the girls themself perhaps you should seek some professional help.
Again...ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I come to OFC to exchange comments with others who are supporters of fastpitch softball and female athletes in general. ?This sight is for constructive discussion within that forum. Obviously, there are those who come here with other objectives in mind. If you think that cheering and chanting are obnoxious, you should read your own posts about facemasks. ?Ignorant....

Sorry guys; I don't respond to too many posts but on this one I couldn't resist. WOW! What is the world coming to when we are teaching our younger ones that if they don't agree with what someone is by the rules that it is okay to take physical action against them. I am a coach of a 14U team and if my girls want to cheer then they can cheer as long as it is in good taste and not disrespectful to the other team. I thought this was a game for the girls; for them to play and enjoy and have fun?

As far as the face mask goes, every girl should wear what equipment they want to wear that makes them feel safe (by the rules). I'd rather have my DD wear an ugly face mask then risk a serious injury! My DD doesn't wear one but if she wanted one and that would make her feel safe then she would have one.

Hit one of my girls because they are cheering and you can bet they will be cheering even louder the next inning. Hit them again and I'll have my parents and the rest of your parents cheering because to teach the girls to take physical action is in bad form.

Nice post, Luv2catch! I've changed my mind. Cheering is good. A knockdown pitch for stealing signs is more a part of the game. You go girl!

Hey, All4softball: Sorry I blew the secret. I didn't know that the none of the girls who wear those masks has ever looked into a mirror. I should have kept the fact that they're ugly and SCARY to myself. Add to the mix one of those really loud GRUNTS some of these pitchers let out when they release the ball and a young hitter could have NIGHTMARES and need COUNSELING for years. Ever think of THAT? Where's the sympathy for a frightened child?

I hear Jason from Friday the 13th has a sister and she's going to star in the next movie: Friday the 13th--- The Pitcher's Revenge.

Let's see.....so I guess if you can't at 12 have the reflexes, reaction time and strength to defeat all of your opponents without a GameFace then you shouldn't play. Since when does a 12-14+ year old have the equivalency of a college student? That makes no sense. There are 6-8 years different. A 12 yo can't drive, why because they don't have the size, knowledge and reaction time of an older person. And as far as girls paying travel and going to college. Who says they all even plan to play in college? These are all girls who LOVE the game of softball. Let them cheer (tastefully) loudly if they want. Let them wear a mask if it pleases them (or their parents). I am pretty sure they are out there to play ball not model for the runway for Ralph Lauren or Vera Wang! Let them play ball even if they will never go on to play softball in college. They are out there to have fun playing softball. If you don't like it then check into competitive chess....I am pretty sure it is quiet around there (but that is just what I know from watching Bobby Fisher or whatever that movie was called).

And here I bet even money he would come back as Jesse James. :-[ ?As soon as you start calling out lady OFCer's honey, you've busted youself Truth, Super Freak, Identity Crisis and the hundreds of other names you will come up with in your exceedingly boring life. ?You make me ever thankful for the knowledgable fastpitch people I have conversations with pool side after a long tournement. ?You don't have a team? ?Just there watching? ?Tell me, do you have to report your address change to the local police dept. for the rest of your life so they can keep track of your residence? ?Go put ANOTHER dollar in the punching bag machine and take another swig of that Wild Irish Rose as the sands of your miserable life continue to slip away. ?Your so full of yourself, your eyes are brown. ::) ?
