Compuware - who's in and who isn't?

There is also an 11 field complex in Marion that is very young and not quite ready for this type of tourney but I could see something there if they continue to develope it.

The Fileds of Dreams and McCune Park could handle the tournament and they are both great complexes. Combined you would have 13 fields, 3 w/lights, and 7 w/tarps.

This summer will be the last summer for us in the travel ball scene except for maybe some 23U. I do not have enough experience (only one slow pitch tournament about 6-8 years ago) to direct a tournament. I don't think I am the right person to direct the tournament, but I would be more than willing to help with the planning or whatever else is needed. I am not really affiliated with an organization, and I am willing to do some travel to help.

Of course you realize that what you are asking for means that some teams will still be upset as you only want the best at the tournament.

Anyway, if anyone is willing to pick up the torch, I would be willing to help. Maybe we could pull something together by Summer 2010.

How about someone like FAST setting up a tournament in Maumee the same weekend as Compuware. Then the college coaches can do like they do in Colorado and spend the weekend running back and forth between the tournaments - or if they want to see all the good talent, the head coach can go to one and the assistant can go to the other. Just an idea.

thanks for your comments Uber, with your experience and knowledge, we greatly appreciate it. SGS/Magic has long felt that Ohio is a hot bed, thus the reason we are kicking off our 1st. Annual Midwest College showcase, in conjunction with the Toledo Tune-up. The Tune-up is one of the largest tournaments going, and didn't need a tie in to be honest, but the SGS board felt it was time to step up and do something we believe in. They are trying to make it VERY affordable, and a real unique format with the traditional data collection session [skills etc.] in the morning, then afternoon Showcase games at one quad in the afternoon. We have sent out 150 emails to midwest college coaches trying to make the natural connection for midwest players.

We also have started and ELITE division, where you must be approved to attempt to draw in some of the best in the midwest. 18u Day, and Both Toledo Buckeye Heat, along with many other really great organizations have already indicated their desire. We'd love to have the wolfpack/nightmare and all the other quality organizations in. We'll also have an open division along with the Elite division. We have ALL 8 fields at Rolf park with 200' fences, and we have another 7 fields at LCRC within1/2 mile available, and if need be CYO has an additional 8 fields within 5 miles. We will have special deals at holiday inn/splash bay etc. and hope to turn this into an "event" that all teams will love and benefit from, especially the serious college aspiring athlete. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Sincerely, SGS

Add Ohio Ice - Silver to the rejection list, received the letter today, 12U Runner up last year.

You have to be kidding me. . . well, I'm sure glad we didn't bother to put together a resume and apply this year, since Ice - Silver dusted us in the semi's of 12U's last year. Given some of the teams that have been accepted I'm finding it awfully hard to believe that Ice - Silver was rejected.

Sounds like to me, a TD should schedule a college showcase the SAME weekend as the Compuware tourney. That TD would probally get some great teams that was passed up. And just keep the tourney 14, 16 and 18u.
I shouldn't give away my ideas....lol

The reason the Compuware Showcase is falling behind is simply because they've let their teams become mediocre. If they focused more on team/player development and recruiting, their teams would be competitive and therefore, they could invite stronger teams to their tournament.

Don't kid yourself about "watching out for #1". EVERY TD does it. What TD would set their teams up to fail? Well, they actually are doing just that by not building powerful teams, but you get my point.

Stingrays Showcase has been successful for two main reasons. First - Year to year, the organization, as a whole, maintains a pretty strong talent base. No one can deny that. Secondly, the showcase is run by volunteers - parents of the kids (or at least it used to be). They are NOT in it for a profit, and it is run by the families who are involved, NOT a third party out to make a profit. That is the main reason it comes off so well every year - people are genuinely interested in keeping the quality and value there. RZ did a fantastic job at the helm there last year - and the results show. Like Woody Hayes said - "You win with people".

Simply put, if there is to ever be a competitor to Compuware here in Ohio, a few things must happen.

1) It CANNOT be run as a profit making venture.
2) It must be staffed by caring volunteers.
3) The host organization MUST consist of high caliber team(s).

Number 3 is key, and IMO the reason Compuware is sinking. You MUST be able to draw the top teams to lure the college coaches. Simply inviting the coaches won't get them there. Any takers?

The Michiana Mystique 14U from Indiana will be at Compuware. It will be the 3rd consecutive year my DD's have been in the tournament (as Indiana Thunder the first two years). I'm glad we're going, it's an excellent tournament but last year I thought the lineup of teams I saw entered at Sluggerfest the same weekend was just as impressive.

I think one of the factors that has always worked in Compuware's favor is the timing of the tournament. It's always one of the first big tournaments after the end of the school year, when the entire travel team can come together. It's early enough in the season that it usually hasn't conflicted with the ASA or NSA State tournaments ( I understand that this year it doe's conflict in Ohio). Our group would love to participate in the Stingray Invitational one of these year's but it always seems to not work out because of our State Tourney's in Indiana.

Good Luck to Everybody this season---no matter which direction your team is going to play.

I agree with all three. However, I think the OFC should start to put it's power to some tangible use. The influence of the OFC has grown over the past couple of years. Someone once told me that if the toilet paper runs out at Sluggerfest, someone will know about it in Cleveland within the hour because of the OFC. I think TDs are forced to prepare more and be a little more proactive because of the OFC. I feel that the drop-dead formats were finally killed because of the power of the people and voice the OFC gives the whole state. There are enough nuts on here that could get an end-all-be-all showcase done in Ohio. The Top 10 tourney would be a start. You get those teams commited to play that tournament and you would have something good started.

Agree Ringor, I think that if for example, SGS, Stingrays, Ice and Wave orgs (do not mean to exclude any org, only an example) were to put together their resources, they could put on a great showcase tournament. Start it on Thursday, and on Sunday evening have an All-Star game selected by scouts to end the tournament. It can be done and I think there are enough people on here that would volunteer their time to make it happen. Toledo would be an ideal setting.

Cincy Doom 95 got the rejection letter yesterday, plenty of good teams available that weekend to play ball. Who's hosting what that weekend?

Looks like Compuware just nailed their coffin shut with all of the rejections for 2009. Damage will take a few years for them to realize.

It was not the same tourney it had been in past years anyway so there will be something taking it's place I am sure...

The only tourneys that I know of or think are on the same weekend are

ASA State A
ASA State B
LGSA Edward Jones in Lancaster NSA WSQ

Sounds like Quakermans wheels are allready turning Goeshen that weekend would be real close to home and a nice park to play at.

I know we have no interest in traveling to MI to play that weekend - not a fan of Compuware at all.

Doug- Put something together and we will be there.
