Compuware - who's in and who isn't?

ASA States 16u is the weekend before in Findlay - isn't it? that was the last word I heard.

we had 6 D1 coaches pull up lawn chairs and watch whole games last year at Compuware. No where eles did I see that kind of scouting except ASA Nationals.

I agree that the 16u Comp was less last year then the year before but they changed their rules and you can't play up this year, and there won't be two teams from the same organization so I'm guessing the will be stronger.

I love Stingray and think it is definetly better competition and better run, but College coaches flock to Compuware. Best of the Best would be second for coaches, then Stingray. 16u ASA States in Massillon last year had a bunch too.

OK - so after reading the whole post... I'm P O'd too. our 16u and 18u teams got in. I was told we couldn't play 18u as a 16u team. I guess that isn't true if the Slammers are playing 16u. I was told that 18u was an open ASA qualifier. He even asked me multiple questions about running and ASA Quailifer - when I told him that the rules were different. He said by "open" that he couldn't limit the number of teams at 18u.

We have 9 great Girls Fastpitch only diamonds here in Pickerington. Lets get this showcase thing rolling.

So his interpretation of "Open" is...As long as I don't limit how many teams get in, he can still pick and choose which teams get in.

Buckeye Heat-Toledo got rejected I heard. They are still a 16-U team for 2009 and I would think would be one of the top couple 16-U teams in Ohio, if not the top team. Our Heat teams have fared pretty well over the years as far as getting into Compuware, so this was a surprise, although much less so after seeing who else didn't get accepted.

I've always thought that if I were trying to put together a new showcase tournament, the first step would be to seek out the top 16-U and 18-U teams in Ohio and the Midwest and try to get them on board. Once the top teams are on board, the college coaches will follow. There is nothing sacrosanct about any tournament location or sponsor, it's all about the quality of players in the tournament.

After the top teams are secured, then it's a matter of sending out info to the college coaches with a list of the teams entered. Finally, make it easy on the college coaches when they get there. If I were running a showcase, here are the things I would make available:
(1) Well-organized booklet with all team rosters and contact info for each player.

(2) If possible, a roped-off area for college coaches to sit at each game, with an area for their chairs and a bleacher available. Call this being spoiled or whatever else, but if the tournament is all about being a college showcase, shouldn't this be a priority? I can't tell you how many times in my few months as a college coach that I have struggled to get a good vantage point on a pitcher or a catcher, while all the parents have planted their chairs in all of the best spots for scouting.

(3) A tent at each set of four fields with beverages and maybe even light snacks if it can be afforded.

(4) A number for college coaches to call to check on rain delays. I have found so far that TDs seem to forget that rain delays and rain outs affect us as much as the travel teams and everyone else involved.

(5) If the tournament includes 12-U and 14-U, keep the 16s and 18s together at the same set of fields. As much as possible, keep the 16s and 18s at one park. That alone is a big factor. If the complex is set up with four fields that back into each other so multiple games can be watched at once, then that's perfect. From what I've seen, many college coaches like to watch one game at a time for a few innings or more and then move on. I prefer to find a spot where I can watch two or more games at once if they involve girls I'm there to watch.

(6) If the tournament charges an entry fee, please just give us a pass. Nobody charges college coaches, but at one tournament I attended in Seattle I had to explain every single time at the different parks that I was a college coach. Eventually I just walked right on by, even as the kids at the table were asking for my pass.

If I think of other things, I will list them here.

Oh, here is one other thing. Teams, put your team profile and any individual profiles in a folder on the fence either behind home plate or near the dugout. More than a few times this summer I would be there to watch a girl or two on one team and would get curious about a player or two on the opposing team, only to find out they didn't have anything printed. Before one game began I tried to get a roster of the team I wasn't there to watch and they had no roster. The coach was told and he walks by and asks who I wanted to know about. I told him that without a roster, I didn't know. He said he would e-mail me one. Naturally, that didn't happen.

Hilliard has got 8 fields at one complex and I know it's booked through the season in 2009already. Perhaps if someone had interest, they could hook up with the rec dept for 2010 season...

that's what we are doing!

JoeA1010- your list looks like ours! This is EXACTLY what we are doing, and MORE for the college coaches from the midwest. We already are getting strong replies and commitments from coaches. We also are having an Elite division to try and attract the best possible teams. We are getting STRONG replies on that also, in fact your Toledo 15u and 16u have indicated they plan on playing, and your 16u coach is on the advisory committee, along with two college coaches and 3 high school coaches. Magic Dave Day is also planning on playing. For more info on the college recruiting showcase:

The only problem I see with this event is that it is USSSA. Not many of the bigger teams play USSSA, they play ASA.

USSSA is really growing in respect in the fastpitch community. Also the quantity of games offered to the teams this early in the season, plus the large field, made the Tune-up a success, we hope it will be even bigger now.
Shutting down all 16/18u games the day of the college showcase in the morning skills sesson and afternoon showcase games ALSO:

1. price of BOTH events is only 65.00 if playing in the tune-up
2. ALL fields at Rolf will have 200' fences for the event
3. Showcase games will be played on the same quad for easy viewing by the coaches, may have to do 2 or 3 rounds depending on players in the showcase
4. as of this date 19 coaches have already committed, which our college advisors say is great this far in advance.

Our organizations goal is not to make money on the event, but to connect players in the midwest to Colleges of all levels in the midwest. 397 colleges have been contacted. Many teams in Ohio have complained Compuware has excluded them, we'd love to make this "The" event in the midwest, and we are offering things for the Elite teams, the non-Elite teams, and even for the player in the midwest who isn't even playing in the tune-up.

Make the 16U ASA State Tournament the same Weekend as Compuware. That would solve the Best Ohio teams going to Michigan.(Or the real Best that were not invited) Promote it and with all the Top 16's teams in the State of Ohio, I am sure the College Coaches will be there. Of the Top 16's don't forget about the Doom. The last years State Champs I think were also 15U. (Nightmare) they have improved there team with Kim Morgason and Shelby Finks from Miami Valley Express. I agree Buckeye Heat are one of the Top teams like Joe said. (Top Team?) The Nightmare I would say is still above everyone. Then Buckeye Heat, Doom, Lasers Orange and Miami Valley, Classics and Extreme Blue might be the closes to the Nightmare. What a Great Tournament it would be.

Lady Knights,

"The only problem I see with this event is that it is USSSA. Not many of the bigger teams play USSSA, they play ASA."

You are correct in your assertion that most of the top flight teams tend to lean more toward ASA. However, in the past there have not been a lot of major ASA events at the same time as the "Tune-up". I believe that is why it has been such a good tournament. Last year we played the Buckeye Heat, the Classics (purple), a very good team from Philadelphia, and a solid team from somewhere in Canada to name a few. There were several very good teams in the 16U age group because there are really no other ASA qualifying events going on and there are several good teams there to get your season started against.

We will be playing there again this year (not because we intend to play USSSA) but because there will be some solid competition there and the tournament has made some great additions by creating the showcase for the elite teams and their players.

I am sure this event in no way jeopardizes Compuware's reputation as the region's premier showcase event but it does give several teams an opportunity to showcase their talents in another format. Give it a year or two and maybe it willl provide some competition for Compuware that this thread seems to be advocating.

So.............back to the original question: (And don't you love how quickly posts lose sight of the original topic?) Who's "in"? Or how do we find out who's in?

Sorry Louuuu

I knew that I got on this thread for a reason. Somehow or another (like others) I ended up off topic.

Magic - White will be playing at Compuware (as well at the Tune-up and Midwest Showcase the week before).

Quakerman's wheel was turning OP. Looks like some others wheels were not far behind....lol... good for you folks. A tournament in Pickerington or Worthington would be great actually for all the teams to center in on. I mean, wow.. we have some great teams here in Ohio.... No reason to get upset over the Compuware tournament...

Just someone step out and hold their own..... David Beckham could get one a flying. I am assured of that thought.
My college Showcase tries have only brought a few. But, I thank OP for saying Goshen is a nice place to play it. It is a nice park to play at indeed.
Good luck with a tourney the same weekend as Compuware.... I think it will turn out to be better one day down the road. Just takes some good people to work at it.

In NAFA last year, our 18u Elite Gold National Tournament was larger than ASA in the amount of teams. Now, that Northern California and Nevada came along with us ( in Nevada NSA State Director is now with NAFA).. I see the Elite Gold in Sulphur, LA (outside of Lake Charles) being a big one. Buckeye Heat out of Columbus has won a berth to go. So has Cincy Storm. I hope they do.

Sure I'd run one that weekend... except my 16u and 18u teams are up north. I'm actually seroiously considering it. If I new I could get all the big guns to come I think we could be certain of getting the colleges to come also.

I can honestly say that Compuware has gotten the ball rolling on more scholarships for Classics Athletes than any single event and we have only been going there for two years (won both times at 16u and thinking a 3rd time would be really cool). It would be hard to break that cord...

Now if ASA would have been a little more thoughtful they would have granted the Classics a 16u - 18u event like last year. That was something to build on.

Great! Now that my freshman dd left our local org. after 5 years for a team that can get into showcase tourneys (we are going to Compuware), everyone is hating on Compuware...
