Cut from the "team"............

My 11 year DD was on "team" for the 2012 season. She attended try outs and was cut from the "team". The reason given was her throwing technique is incorrect. She attends 6 other try outs and makes all the other teams. I am at a complete loss. She is a quiet girl. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Sounds familiar to me... My daughter played 10 u with an org an finished top 3 in batting, strikeout % and on base %. This was 5 years ago. She was cut during the 12u tryouts and the reason given was that her arm was not strong enough. Well, she has gone on to start every game at catcher(her main position) or in the outfield(secondary position) in every game since with the Ohio Stingrays. The ***** ******* org said her arm wasn't strong enough. However, as a freshmen and sophomore she mad all OCC and Second team All Central Dristict. All while not changing a thing in her throwing motion. Last year at the Stingrays NFCA camp, she had the third highest average pop time of 90 some catchers. While this year she had the highest average pop time at catcher. So, I feel your point about getting cut from a team. However, for my DD, it definitley worked out for the best.

Just to toss out another perspective...
Several years ago I coached a young team. Had a player with tremendous potential but could not throw. Worked and worked and worked with this kid, even had her come to weekly private practice sessions for the purpose of learning these fundamentals. Happily gave up my "free" time to do this. No one worked with her at home and her progress was limited. Heard the dad comment after the season how her coaches failed her. If parents aren't willing partners in developing their players then its not always necessarily the coaches that have failed.

In a realistic world there are 2 parts of practicing. 1. Teaching the fundamentals/skills 2. Practicing using the fundamentals and skills taught. When practicing 8 hours a week...there is only limited time to spend with each player in regard to their repsective development. If a kid wants to get better, they HAVE to practice on their own in order to get better because 8 hours a week will not break a bad habit or make anyone better and you can see what kids work outside of practice. Parents need to understand that coaches are not miracle workers...and that they need to take some responsibility to work with their daughters at home. So IMHO, you did all you could. If anyone failed her it was her parents.

Unfortuately there could be another reason.... Maybe the parent is the issue. If daughter has had multiple offers she must have skills, in that case why would the team let her go.... just something to think about

Teaching throwing technique to a girl with bad form is perhaps the toughest habit to break. It can be done, but requires the player to buy into the coaching and not just fall back into what is comfortable as soon as the coach walks away. It takes coaching, help from the parents, practice and a conscious effort by the player. Proper technique often feels akward when you've been doing it the incorrect way for some time. If this is indeed an accurate observation, you may want to keep that in mind to improve that for the future. Its much easier to fix it now than in high school. Also, keep in mind selecting a team can be tough and may come down to the little things. Im sure there is a place for your daughter. Everything happens for a reason. I would just move on without sour grapes. Naturally deep down when facing an old team your going to want to win, but I wouldn't put any more emphasis on beating that team than any other. Perhaps they chose a player that didn't try out for 6 other teams? Just my $.02

Pray you play your former team. Show them the "technique" they chose to cut.

Right on! That's part of what makes the experience great! It doesn't have to be a negative or mean experience. An opportunity like that can be a lot of fun!
