I have been coaching HS for 11 years and have only had a JV a few times. This year we have 22 out and will have a JV squad. I had told them the first day of practice that we would have tryouts at the end of the second week. Today I informed them that I was going to wait longer because each day I was seeing something different out of different girls and it kind of has me scratching my head. We don't have our first scrimmage for another 20 days!!! I have some underclassmen, including some freshman that have a real good shot at varsity, and I think two weeks in a gym is just not enough time to give a fair assessment, and be cut and dry on a set varsity team. I have told them several times this week that some girls will float back and forth.

I do agree that if you are making cuts, waiting till one week before the season is not right. But if you know you are going to have a fair amount of girls going back and forth, why set things in stone so early. Let them show you what they got, which will strengthen your case to an unhappy player or parent, and/or those who are on the bubble may falter down the stretch. I think it's perfectly ok to wait. FWIW

Are you mixing all the candidates or are you separating them into groups that are similar to your projected V/JV squads?

We're in the same boat. Our tryouts lasted three days. We had 16 or 17 come to tryouts and the team is carrying 13 players. Sad considering we're D1 and we are conference champs four straight years. Our pay to participate fee is $495 so I wonder how much that is hindering the numbers.

Right now and for the next week or so they are all together. We are conditioning/weight training and working hard on fundamentals both offensively and defensively before getting into situations and nailing down anything solid.

On a side note...We are in our fourth year of having a sanctioned Jr. High team, and the girls coming in as freshman are so much further ahead then in years past which allows me to put in a more rigorous and regimented strength and conditioning program.

Makes sense so you can work on defense and offensive drills and see who really improves for the few weeks you have till the season starts ,you dont have to gel till the end of the season when tournaments start , I m sure the coach has in mind who should be were and can practice girls in different positions with different girls , also you can see who is going to keep competing to play on varsity , sometimes the best player doesnt perform well on the tryout days and sure you can swap during the year but by the end of the season you want to be playing the best softball together.

In KY both JV and Var play back to back at same location (JV 5-530, Var 630-7 or vice versa)...DD pulled double duty her entire FR year, a few times SO year, and may see a little JV dirt this season if needed....when she first began playing on Doom, I was surprised to learn from other parents that in OH Var and JV play same time, but different locations....seems to be a big restriction on coaches....from the outside looking in, seems a lot of OHSAA rules are restrictive (read:Silly).
