High School practice

Is there guidance from OHSAA concerning a HS practice off-site? I looked and it's ok for 7th and 8th grade, BUT nothing for high school.

Let me clarify, a parent is putting this together, not the school.

As long as a parent or non-affiliate of the coaching staff is running it, as far as I know there are no restrictions on how many kids or where you hold practice.

Even if it's during the season?

If it is this time of year that could be a problem. They cannot have more than 4 girls together for any type of organized practice no matter if it is a parent or coach running it. The girls can coach themselves like the "open gym" concept that is so popular.

How in the world can your high school have practice off-site with a parent during season? Your high school coach will most likely have enough practices that this parent won't be able to have the opportunity to have an off-site practice. AND majority of coaches would not like hearing or knowing that a parent is trying to do this during THEIR time/THEIR season...

Thanks everyone that replied so far. I did dig into the parent a little bit more (granted I'll give him benefit because his heart is in the right place), but I don't think he knows all of the rules of OHSAA. Heck, I don't. The last thing I want to see is someone get in trouble over a misunderstanding.

Then how do high school teams participate in winter leagues? I have to say, the OHSAA rules make no sense.

I always wondered the same thing. I assume softball rule 4.7 which says participation in an indoor league is not a violation of non-interscholastic regulation 7.5 if played between 11/1/13 and 2/1/14 was the reason winter indoor leagues are okay but I agree they are hard to follow and make sense of.

I would venture a guess that this parent would have to meet OHSAA standards of being on the field at any time during the specified HS season. Which includes a background check, Pupil cert., Concussion cert., TB test, etc....

And possibly most important of all....permission by the HS head coach.

A lot of it is confusing and doesn't seem to make sense ... I do think there are some good reasons behind some of the rules but I won't digress here. I'll probably get corrected on this as there's always debates and definitely a lack of clarity from OHSAA, but my understanding could be summarized as this ...

* From the start of high school practice (late February) till the conclusion of a respective team's high school season, athletes can't play or practice with other teams ... but they can the rest of the year
* In the months of June and July, high school coaches are allowed 10 total interactions with their players, whether that's one at a time or all of them together
* In the fall and winter, high school coaches can interact with up to 4 players at a time, and as many as 4 players from the same school can play together on the same team
* In the months of November through January, high school teams can play indoors together as long as high school coaches don't coach them

Per the original post, a parent could be hosting practices of high school players if there is no involvement from the coaches most any time of the year except during the high school season starting in late February. I agree with Scooter that if a parent is doing this during the high school season, then by default they will be considered a high school coach, whether paid or not, and will be subject to all of the rules and regulations. And, oh yeah, they better make sure the high school coach is OK with that.
