If h.s. coaching can not begin before March 10th, is illegal to attend an open gym practice prior to those dates? Technically, try-outs have not even taken place yet correct? Also, even though pitchers and catchers start throwing Feb 25th, wouldn't this pertain also?

Thank you

No, open gyms are ok as long as it is not an organized practice with the coaching staff. There can be no limits on who attends. I am looking for the exact rule at OHSAA now.

The only thing that can be done until today is conditioning with the coach's.

Here is the rule from OHSAA:
6.1.1) A school may open its athletic facilities for unstructured free play provided the
activity is supervised by a school employee who may remove participants for disciplinary
reasons.
6.1.2) The school may designate the sport or sports that will be played during the free play
period, but may not limit participation to a select group of students from within the
school. Participation may be limited to students enrolled in the school.
6.1.3) There may be no designation of who will play on which team or who will play
whom. Only the students participating may be involved in selecting or substituting
players.
6.1.4) The regulation timing of games is not permitted.
6.1.5) Written scorekeeping is not permitted.
6.1.6) No individual invitations, written or oral, are permitted.
6.1.7) A coach, paid or unpaid, violates the provision of these regulations when the coach
requires, suggests or in any way implies that a student?s chance to be selected for an
interscholastic squad is contingent upon participation at an open gymnasium or
facilities program.
6.1.8) Mandatory attendance at open gymnasiums or facilities is not permitted.
6.1.9) Transporting athletes to an open gym is a violation for any member of the coaching
staff, paid or unpaid.

RobertK: Go down to the high school section and the third post. They are discussing this topic and they have posted the OHSAA rules on this subject.

What about a hitting clinic? This past Sat. a local college put on a hitting clinic and DD's high school. The Varsity coach said it was "mandatory" for all girls wanting to play ball for the HS.

Clinics and camps are ok., I will let someone else cut and paste it if they like. Mandatory, even open gym is not mandatory in the rules above. . I will let someone else debate that one. We have never made that statement to our kids. We tell them we would like them to attend.

As long as coaches are not coaching and making an organized plans, it is ok. Basketball coaches have open gym year around and the basketball are out and they are shooting and playiing basketball. Open hitting and throwing with non-pitchers is OK. Just because bats and balls are used does not mean you are a cheater. It is OK for coaches and players to work hard. People who complain about breaking the rules are lazy and do not want to put in the time
