I have a question on tagging on a throw down to 2nd on a stolen base.

It depends on if there are any other base runners on or how close the play is. If that is the only runner, catch the ball, block the bag, and hold the tag if it is close. If there are other runners on, a quick sweep tag is best so you can quickly get in the throwing position to make the next play.

Great advice, still see to many girls apply the tag up high, and then see their coach go crazy because blue called her safe. I give credit to the umpires for finally making the girls put the tag on the feet or shins. Whole lot of leg from the stomach to the feet.

And I've had just as many that go the other way. A high tag is applied, but it's still applied before the runner touches the base and she's out.

Some coaches will argue for a safe call just because "the tag was high"!

High tag, low tag, swipe tag or waiting for the runner to slide into the glove tag...none of that should matter. The fielder either makes the tag before the runner touches the base or she does not.

bretman --- all I'm asking for is for the umpire to make a TRUE effort to get out from behind the plate and make the best call he/she can. Not sit back there and make the call. I know the game can be fast at certain ages. But to just stand there behind the plate and not move at all I have a problem with that.

So do I. So does the umpire manual. So would an evaluator assigned to rate this official.
