Interpretation of General Reg 5.3: Impossible?

5.3) Individual skill instruction may be received in any sport by a squad member at any time in individual or group lessons. The coach may not conduct individual or group lessons for a squad member except during June 1-July 31 and during the season of the sport.

I have always considered this to mean that a travel ball coach who is not on a school coaching staff could give individual instruction during the high school season ("at any time"). Because of the really poor drafting of reg changes applicable in the 2009-2010, I've now concluded it is safest for Ted and I not to conduct any individual lessons until the player has been released from the high school program.

The problem is created because some of the new changes refer to a "school coach", suggesting that the simple word "coach" encompasses more than just "school coaches".

Of course, to interpret the simple word "coach" to mean all travel ball coaches, regardless of whether they are on a high school coaching staff, renders Regulation 5.3 totally silly, because it suggests that a travel ball-only coach can't conduct a one-on-one session during the fall or winter. So all those hitting and pitching coaches who also coach travel teams would have to choose between income-producing lessons or unpaid travel ball coaching.

I guess I'm feeling especially crabby today, but I think that an organization that takes such an aggressive micro-management approach (read the Ohio High School Athletic Association) could at least hire an attorney who is competent in drafting regulations so we don't end up with junk that would get a first year attorney fired from most law firms.

BTW, just to make it clear: neither Ted nor I have conducted any one-on-one sessions with ANY OHSAA interscholastic squad member, which is defined under OHSAA as a student who has played in an interscholastic scrimmage or contest.

Their attorney is out of Akron .. Go figure.

You wouldn't believe what I had to go through to be able to give out uniforms at the Uniform Blowouts. Took my attorney to talk to their attorney and believe you me... he didn't seem to want to talk about it with my attorney... until the issue was pressed.

In my mind, OHSAA stands for Overzealous High School Athletic A**holes
