Is Playing for more than 1 Travel Team cool???

I'm not sure if this is a growing trend or what, but this year I have come across several girls that are playing for more than one travel team. ?Beside the fact that it has to be completely exhausting and deprives the kid of any "summer vacation" at all, is this ethical behavior? ?I mean, if you start out dedicated to a single team, then decide to join on with another organization later on, is that really fair to the team you originally signed on with??? ?If the original team plays every other weekend and has practices scheduled on the "off" weekends, and the player is now unable to attend the practices because she is playing in tournaments for the "newly added team",...that seems completely unfair to her original team-mates. What do you think?

Streak,

Yeah only one roster at a time...one ASA roster, one NSA roster, one USSSA roster, one PONY roster....

statman is the teacher so he can add up the numbers but I think one roster doesn't really mean one roster. :-?

Well........

There are ways to play for two teams, and probably do it legally.

Let's take the case of a travel team that only plays on weekends. Weekdays are reserved for rest, with a single practice mid-week.

DD could be asked to play on a school team that primarily works the weekday double-header circuit. The team plays in a few weekend tournaments, but the understanding is that DD is not available on weekends - that is travel time.

The weekday games are not sanctioned, but rather league games organized to give these school teams an outlet for competition. Since there is no sanction, then DD is never on a roster, so no conflict.

Is it too much?

Our travel team will book between 60 and 70 tournament games this summer, not counting our winter tournament and a few scrimmages that we have played. An additional 16-20 weekday games during the summer, plus around 20 school-ball games would put DD up around that magic number of 100+ games that I keep hearing these powerhouse California teams play.

Granted, the competition would not be the same level, but there is power in repetition.

Frankly, I don't advocate that many games - school ball + travel ball seems enough for me. But if someone wants to go the extra mile (and it needs to be DD, not me) then the opportunity is there.

girls can play on two different organization but not the same age bracket.and if one has qualified for natoinal then they are committed to that team.

Okay, say you can only be on one ASA or NSA roster at a time, but what if the player is rostered on 1 ASA team and 1 NSA team???

They can do that. As long as they aren't on two of the same sanction rosters.

First of all if you played say 2 years on the same travel team and then you decide you want to play on another travel team ( ie tourney team) just for exercise then both teams qualify for Nationals do you think it is fair to play for a team that you just played on for exercise during the week? I think your obligation is to the team you played for 2 years and if you don't want to play when it really matters ( ie: Nationals) then ask for your RELEASE!!!!!!

Its bad enough players at high school ages playing in the local area rec league during the week. I believe this is totally unfair for the other kids who are playing ball a couple months out of the year and should not have to compete with travel players. Usually this is done by parents stacking roster teams with their daughters travel team teammates. To play on 2 differant travel teams is nuts and I would never allow it.

Ok to bring this up again. You have two 12U teams in the same organization. You go into a ASA tourney and combine the teams, due to not having enough kids. Due you have to release the kids from the one team and pick them up on the older or younger team just to play in this tourney?

I think you can play for a Pony tournament on Wednesday and go play for an ASA Tournament on Thursday. Some allow to go play on other rosters but others do not. To me Little Leauge is a dictatorship, ie: Our 10u team won district 2 this past weekend, and I thought along with other coaches I talked to that we could paly in another tournament in between District and State. State for the 10u did not start for 16 days. My team entered a non sactioned tournament on Friday and district was over on Thursday, I thought I could do it. I was missing about four grls anyway. Well Lakeview called and I was disqualified from State. Little Leauge is that strict, I tried to appeal it twice with no luck. I had no advantage of entering another tournament, it's just a bunch of girls who love the game of softball and someone called and took it all away. If I had know that I could not be in any other tournament I would have never jepordized our state title. Also, Lakeview was not able to go in place of us, and our district title was not taken away from us. i even offered to have the leauge suspend me; it's a shame that a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds pay the price for an adult mistake, and it is also a shame that an adult made a phone call to begin with. Anyhow I felt really bad for those girls.

Rules aside, in my opinion, each player needs to be solely committed to one team, per year. ?If a player is looking for more playing time, then its likely they aren't on the right travel team. ?Some travel teams play 6 tourneys a year, some play 14......find the organization that fits your needs and commit to them 100%. ?Its the best thing for the player and the team.
