I decided to start another thread on the subject of face masks. Most of us agree that corners and pitchers should wear them, while there's not as much consensus as to whether they should be mandated.

Folks, as the point has been made many times, someone is going to eventually get killed. We have heard dozens of stories in the last few years of very serious injuries, and other near misses. We also know that some players don't wear them because they're afraid they either won't get recruited or are actually already in a situation where a coach either frowns on them, or outright won't play players who wear them. And then there's always the peer pressure thing ... some who don't wear them will make fun of those who do.

It's time to do something and it's time for those of us who feel strongly about the subject to at least try to make a difference. We've talked about more players beginning to wear them at the college level, but they're still few and far between, and it's going too slow. It just ain't going to happen unless the sanctioning bodies mandate it, and the sanctioning bodies apparently need some prodding for that to happen.

Please think about this some more, and whether you want your own DD or granddaughter to one day suffer a terrible injury because they're not wearing one. Think about whether your inaction might have contributed to someone else's DD and family to go through this. I am forming a group to explore what can and should be done, and then to take the lead to do it. I believe we will likely end up putting together a letter with a lot of facts and get a bunch of signatures to petitition the sanctioning bodies .... OHSAA, NCAA, PGF, ASA, USSSA, and NSA for starters.

The game we love and talk about here is different than any other. While it's most similar to baseball, the bases are much closer and small ball is more prevalent. It's taken mandating over the years to get hockey to wear face masks, and for multiple sports to utilize helmets. Everyone is much more aware these days of what damage concussions can do, and certainly there have been many concussions suffered from the lack of face masks, while many others have been prevented by the use of face masks especially with younger players.

Please consider volunteering to help me with effort. I've already had 2 people do so, but we need more. Also, if you know someone who has lived through the horror of having their daughter badly injured, and who might be willing to help as well. Please PM or e-mail me at jffbaker3@gmail.com if you're interested in maybe just saving a life one day ...

We require our corners and pitchers to wear a mask and let the other position players make their own decision. Safety is paramount for us. In time, the majority of college players will be wearing them. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

As you know Jeff, I'm definitely in.
We need to gather as large a block of parents and players as we can to go to the sanctioning bodies.
I think it would be an immense help to have the support of as many players, regardless of age levels, to show that there are a large group of kids who do wear and want to wear masks for their protection. We should also rally all travel and school coaches that promote their use.
We as parents, coaches and players need to get this under way ASAP, if we wait for its acceptance,we won't see it mandated until something we all fear becomes a reality.

I am in on the campaign Coach!! If they start wearing them in 8u - 10u ... it becomes routine like wearing underwear! start early parents and coaches!

Heck I like many others have been talking about this for years... my DD's both started wearing them their first year at 9u and 10u. they both pitched and both played middle infield and ALWAYS wore masks. its part of the uniform! Now at 16U playing 3rd for HS and travel...wears a mask! and my 14U DD even wears a mask in center field and 2nd base... not afraid to admit it and actually glad to boast about it! lol

At Stay in Softball clinics we give all girls facemasks for the clinics and explain how they help not only keep players safe but also help players get down on ground balls better (by not being afraid of getting hit). Players who do not have their own mask are allowed to keep the masks after the clinic. We are always looking for donations of new or used facemasks so we can continue to provide them to all players who need them.

I'm willing to take the petition with me to the USSSA National Meeting this November.

The thing to think of is how to word a potential rule mandate and what the penalty(s)are for non-compliance. Please keep it clear and concise. As someone who has had rules amendments both pass and fail at national meetings, you got to get there attention quick and keep it.

I walked down this road with NSA at one of their national meetings. The floor voted to have it mandatory for the corners and pitcher and it passed but then failed with the board of directors. The Board felt that it was too vague with just the corners and if the defense did some sort of special rotation or had the infielders up near the pitcher, then they technically should also be made to wear them also. Also NSA was worried that someone would sue them if it was mandatory (I have no reason why this was even mentioned, but after leaving them I understand their decisions). :)

I have made contact with everyone I can about this.
I e mailed all contacts. OHSAA doesn't care about your daughter, my daughter or any other kid!!!
i have given up... I give in to the horrible fact as you mention, the ONLY way this will be mandatory is AFTER a girl gets KILLED. As for my daughter, Parent rule she wears the mask. She does not mind or notice it. She already has full ride athletic scholarship to D-1 school and Coach is fine with it... So we are good... But it pisses me off OHSAA preaches safety at those yearly meetings we have to go to and they could give a shit!!!! Every single person on their board blew me off and oases the Buck saying it was not necessary!!! That it's optional... You and I know if it was mandatory no one would think twice it a year or two. Be just like catchers helmet!!!

As far as compliance goes, I would suppose something along the lines of no mask at corners or
Pitcher and the player sits until complying with the rule? I know this would really honk off a group of players/parents and coaches, but an effective mandatory rule needs an effective penalty for compliance. Grab the mask and next inning you're back in. I mean there has to be something that grabs their attention and with at least some small teeth to it or what would be the point. It's along the lines of the old battle on motorcycle helmets and seat belts. It's one thing to be an adult and make a decision that can negatively affect your life, but a child doesn't have the necessary maturity to make thes kinds of decisions .

Facemask is mandatory for my team. I had a parent tell me it was stupid and my response to her was simple... i value these kids lives. Love each and everyone of them. I would rather see them wear a mask than see mom and dad spend 5 grand on dental work or worse. Yes we all love to win but US coaches are the first to run out when someone gets hurt whether its our team or not. I have 11 DDs on one team.
Any way i can helpout with this I AM IN.

I dint realize there was a rule that prohibited the use of mask in Ohio. In our state the players are free to wear them.

My daughters team has played in Ohio a few times. I dont remember anyone telling them they could not wear a mask.
When did this rule get put into place?

No org or association is prohibiting wearing masks, some of us feel they should be mandatory for at least corners and pitchers, and that is what this thread is all about, gaining acceptance of the mandatory wearing of protective masks. It has been stated that a number of college coaches ( by no means all of them) take a dim view of a girl wearing a mask. This is the antiquated outlook that we are trying to get changed. Masks by no means make anyone less of a player, they are simply a piece of protective equipment that can at the least be injury preventive and at best life saving.

Dan, Mike, Jeff and others ... thanks for your support. And Mike, great advice on including penalties that are clear and concise and some of the complications that can arise from shifts. Definitely something for us to think through ... just on the surface, I could see it being something like Pitchers, 1B, 3B and any other fielders who might play within 40 (or 45?) feet of the batter. And the penalty should be no different than if you don't wear a helmet to bat ... you don't bat ... but definitely some details for us to sort out.

Dave, thanks for posting that link ... I can't actually pull that up here in the office, but will look at it from home tonight.

Agree that the college coaches antiquated thinking on this is improving, but it's just too slow ... how many more young ladies will be seriously injured in the meantime before it changes?

You may try contacting someone from Rip it they may have a vested interest in helping this cause. I am sure they would like every governing body to require them. I also would be in on helping anyway possible. I know a girl that got a broken nose from a ball and it was a terrible to see.

I wonder if any of the governing bodies would want to be the first to require it. The comment Mike Craig mentioned about the NSA being worried about a lawsuit, for instance. They probably don?t want to require it and then be sued when someone still incurs some sort of injury despite wearing the mask (nothing one of their lawyers couldn't fix with some CYA language). Those organizations may also be worried about their revenue.

Seems like you have to target those orgs plus maybe the NCAA? Maybe with a general campaign that highlights player injury stories. Like someone else said, it would help if you had someone with personal experience, or a group of someones. Maybe you could find some physician(s) who's vocal about it?

WearTheMask.org is available for $15

You can create an online petition and embed in your site or blog: https://www.change.org/petition
If you build awareness via Fastpitch forums like this one, you could invite people to like your site/facebook/twitter/etc to contribute stories and photos.

Re: the NCAA?

This article talked about the NCAA not being ready to enforce masks because "because the equipment is in the early stages of development, and there's not enough research available to ensure that a product exists that would truly protect players."

http://www.recordonline.com/article/20150531/SPORTS/150539934

It also talked about NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment)

"NOCSAE sets the standards the NCAA uses for batting and football helmets, but the organization does not yet have a standard for softball facemasks for defensive players."
