Lets start a thread on drills etc. for slap hitting. I have an 18U slapper and now starting the process all over with my first year 10U DD.

Looking for some unique drills or anything like that you've come up with or seen.

We use two.
1. Howard taught to the dd. You soft toss and call what the hitter must do. Bunt, Hit, Drag, Hard Slap, Power Slap, Soft Slap.

2. I put Milk jugs as targets and the dd slaps off of a machine or a T and must hit the milk Jug. This one I picked up off of the many soft ball hitting sites I visit. Or you can put cones down and you must hit between the cones.

Teach them the foot work first. Then make sure they are keeping the shoulders square till contact. It would seem must now are teaching the cross over step and this gives you more options than just slapping. I have got to talk to a few of team USA about this topic and slapping is a weapon if used correctly. College's are putting a premium on good slappers.

Ive used buckets with my oldest, thats a good drill. As far as colleges, my oldest got plenty of attention, all from D2 and under But to be honest she got money for softball but got a lot more for grades lol, You have to be good enough to make the team, but if ya want money grades and clubs are the way to go for sure. The more things your involved in the more money you can get. You can get a ton of cash from DECA and JA lol, well my DD spent so much time on softball she didnt join many clubs hahaha, thats why we call her our trial and error DD :D

Playing softball and sokker , along with Church activities keeps her pretty busy. This summer 7 days a week. Not sure how she would find time for any clubs. I edited my above post, Uber. Take away the not.

I had my older DD take lessons from Coach Cunningham at OWU. We didn't hit a moving ball for about the first 4-5 lessons. Two things she had her do early was practice her footwork in front of a mirror to see that she kept the front shoulder closed and her head from bouncing up and down. The other one that really helped is before she started slapping live she put her in a cage with a machine and her glove on, she had to do her footwork and catch the ball deep, that led us to the bat and hitting the ball back in the zone to the hole between 3rd and short....the longest throw in the infield for the defense.

DD has worked with Cassie and really likes her at OWU. Just the footwork is different she was teaching the drop back style that most do not use today.

The thing about the jab step back it's not for every slapper, my little one uses it, my oldest stopped using it once she started seeing more change ups, she also swings away from the left so one less clue for the fielders LOL. I'm cool with both, dropped 1 kids jab, added it to another kid due to a timing issue, both were successful

Uber. I think that is the key. Howard teaches you to hit first than slap from the left side. So if you swing away , as much as you slap( depending on what the defense is giving you) then you are right. She hits away as much as you slaps now.

Depends on who you play. Most in high school playing at the D3 level you might be able to get out, if you have a great defense, but very few can you K's. Tell that to the college coaches at a showcase event, I'm sure they will find that comment interesting and will let you try to prove it. .

I've been watching the Kentucky LSU game for about an hour or so now, and every slap hit has been an out. I'm sure there are a few that can, there were not many successful at it against DD's summer team last year and her team played at the highest level in Ohio at 16u and 18u. Sorry SB, just not a big fan of it. I will ask coach Gulas from ashland about it when I talk to her again.

Sheilah has not had any slappers that I'm aware of over the years that I have watched AU play. Plus not much speed, but she liked watching my DD at her speed and agility camp. Watch west coast softball or talk to any of our Ohio teams that played out west. Different type of softball than you see in the Midwest. DD played against the the Sting Rays last year, not sure they would agree with you on the easy out. . Playing D2 high school this year as a Freshman. OB% is 538.

Carrie Hosier at Ashland slaps, or atleast she did last year lol. Good little ball player and Gulas does recruit slap hitters. I know of 2 from the class of 2010 she recruited, one signed at Niagra the other at Tiffin.
