I'm sure that a great deal of you have already heard, but for those of you that haven't. The NFCA has approved metal cleats for high school softball. Will the OHSAA permit metal?

Doubt it! >:(

In case you haven't noticed OHSAA is light years behind the rest!

However-- it is okay for MY son to wear 'em (and has been for years). That must be because my 3 boys are far better athletes, and more responsible than my 2 girls! ;D ;D ;D

Actually it's the NFHS that approved the use of metal, just reported on NFCA (don't you love all this alphabet soup ;));

From being one of the few things that result in an immediate ejection to legal equipment....hummm.....The 2008 NFHS Softball Rules Book presented by Ringor.

Almost as odd as the bat ad a few years back that was on the ASA Illegal Bat List!

Welcome to OFC Matt, what took you so long to find us.
Getting tired of that stuffy old JJ?

With the addition of Matt, and our "bretman" all our umpiring questions should be covered! ;)

Well it is official the OHSSA has approved metal cleats starting in 2008. I hope the high school coaches spend time on sliding.

Heat .... where did you see that it was approved by OHSAA? We work on sliding evey year but seeing as how the entire pre-season in Northern Ohio is inside I wonder how the school is going to feel about metal cleats on our gym floor! ;)

OHSAA, has not updated yet, but they are slow, it took them late in the year to publish the 2007 rule changes on the web site. The Huddle is covering this in depth. Also the metal toe plate was approved along with the spikes.

The OHSAA follows NFHS Rules.

Just because the NFHS adopts a rule does not mean the OHSAA has to use it. The NFHS allows protests of games, but the OHSAA did not adopt this rule.
I wouldn't look for metal cleats on the field this coming year anyways, if at all.

Shayne the next meeting to discuss changes for OHSAA is set up Aug 9. Since this would be the first meeting since this came out , do you know if this is on the docket to be discussed? It sounds like you know they have ruled against it, we were of the opinion they have not discussed it yet.

The NFHS is not giving the state associations a choice on this one. I spoke with Roxanne Price of the OHSAA. Metal cleats are now permitted in high school softball.

There is an entire section in the NFHS Book that deals with Rules By State Adoption. Stuff like game ending procedures, tie-breakers, protests, forfeits for a team not showing. However, the OHSAA has "bent" the rules in the last few years with the bat gimmick of a couple of years back and the face-mask waiver of 2006. The reasoning was about money that some member school didn't have to upgrade all their equipment. The metal cleats will be purchased by the player for personal use, not by the school.

Thanks Joe A. That was what My AD was saying. We ended up in fourth place in Pickerington. See you this winter in one of the many camps we both seem to attend. We just got back from Zanesville and it will take me a few days to dry out!

Looks like I'll have do dig that old rusty file of mine out of the garage and start getting the spikes ready for Spring HS season. ;)

After wearing spikes in Baseball and Softball (slowpitch, ASA. USSSA would not allow them) My DDs will never wear spikes as long as I can stop them lol. I have seen numerous injuries directly related to spikes. Especially outfielders spiking themselves on the legs diving for balls. Many of these injuries were from players that had worn spikes for years, including a few that played D1 College baseball. Its just my opinion but I would like them out for both Boys and girls. However, if they allow the boys to wear them then they must do the same for the girls.

/e Climbs off of his soapbox. :)

I also have worn spikes recently in mens Slowpitch as well as the plastic cleats. I played one league that allowed it and one that did not. It was hard to adjust to the spikes. However I LOVE them. I did have some scarry monents at times because of IMHO switching back and forth. I personally never seen any injuries from spikes but will not allow my DD to wear them at this time.

Still puzzled on why they decided to allow them to be worn.
