I was wondering if anyone else heard that high school coaches can now work with 4 girls at a time in September? Not sure exact day that I was told but I can't find it on the ohsaa website anywhere. If you have do you know where I can find this info?

Lots of OSHAA changes this year. Home school students will have easier eligibility. Private school students can declare their athletic eligibility for their public school. New transfer rules. The list goes on.

But where? There is nothing on ohsaa web that says this stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

We are loving the new homeschool/private school rule! We were just told about it by the HS coach in our town about a week ago. Our daughter's school doesn't have any sports for girls (it is a very small school - 7 kids in her class) so this is a very welcome change for us! : )

the rule is an new ALL sports rule changed by OHSAA...not just softball. It won't be specifically listed in the softball section; the other changes mentioned were legislative changes made in the state budget and many of them won't be 'usable' until next spring after the appropriate state departments write the administrative rules for said changes.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Rule 8.6 of the General Sports Regulations for 2013 - 2014
"Interscholastic coaches in the team sports of baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, ice hockey, ******, softball, track & field, volleyball and wrestling may provide individual instruction anytime outside the season of play outside the defined no-contact periods. Individual instruction is defined as no more than four individuals present at one time in all combined facilities where the instruction is taking place. Implementation date: September 3, 2013. Guidance on this regulation is available at ohsaa.org."

I love it!

BEAR IN MIND Rule 8.8 which reads "Members of the coaching staff are limited to a total of 10 days in any combination of instructional program days and non-interscholastic days as specified in Sports Regulation 7.9. Note: See the modified Individual Instruction regulation under General Sports Regulation 8.6."

For private school students, the law takes effect officially 90 days after bill was signed, which was July 1, but OSHAA is treating the law as it is in effect now. Private and home school children could play fall sports now if their district allows.

I am still a bit confused on this. Does this mean coaches can instruct as many as 4 at a time in the same building. And that that can be done 10 separate occasions per player?

The 10 days is for team practices in June/July..The rule for fall/winter is individual instruction. No limits except only 4 players at a time in gym.

Can anyone explain why there are restrictions on coach contact as well as the restrictions from travel ball once HS ball begins?

I understand not being able to compete in tournaments while school ball is in session but do not quite understand why training with the team must stop.

OHIO ohsaa is behind times, many other states don't have those restrictions... Ohio is still in the DARK AGES...

George ... I'm not sure of the reason, but I would guess it has to do with drawing a very firm line in the sand so you don't have situations where players are missing high school activities for travel/outside ones. I can imagine how many travel coaches/players/parents would rationalize that if there is a travel practice and a high school practice on the same night, that they would get more out of the travel practice. What would stop a selfish travel coach from saying his or her practice is mandatory if you want to play? Keep in mind that travel teams usually consist of players from different school systems who play and practice at different times, and that it would be very difficult to find practice slots for travel teams that didn't conflict with some of their players' school ball activities or, worse yet, leaving them no time to do their studies, etc.

I have heard (not confirmed) that Cali addressed this years ago by letting the travel teams practice on Sunday because the High Schools were losing so many players to travel that they needed to do something. Again, I can't confirm this, it just came up in conversation while out there. Maybe SoCal can address this better.

I agree with your theory. Once in HS, while I can understand the restrictions about competition (games) during HS season, I do not understand why there is such a restriction on practicing with their teams as long as it does not conflict with their respective HS team and acedemics.

I never thought of pressure being applied by a travel/club program. My minimal exposure / experience with it has had my DD's travel coach's in full support of the school program. (Would this change if the rule changed? who knows?)

Although the skills are not always at a level they are used to, I know my DD had an absolute blast playing with her high school friends / classmates ..... struggled a bit adjusting back to travel ball ... then had a blast playing with her travel team. She was blessed to have a qualified "fastpitch coach" be her HS coach ....... where the skill level of teammates might lag behind, I will say there is merit to practicing daily after school in HS versus 1 or 2x a week during travel season.

OHSAA in the dark ages?? NO WAY!!

Gopher ... Sunday's sounds like a reasonable acception to me ... hopefully Cali starts something that works!

CIF Southern Section (southern half of state except LA city and San Diego) used to have an 'association rule' that heavily regulated HS coaches of all sports from coaching their HS players on non-scholastic teams to keep them from forcing their HS players to play on their club/travel teams. Many travel coaches wouldn't coach HS because of it. They dropped it 6-7 years ago, about the time my son entered HS.

Statewide, HS coaches for all sports are not allowed to have contact with their players on Sundays during the HS season - this is to give the kids at least one day a week respite from their coach.

San Diego Section does not allow HS players to practice with their travel teams during HS season because Tom Dodd used to run marathon 8-hr practices.

Travel teams in most of the other sections tend to practice on Sundays during the HS season (they can't play games) because there is no conflict with the HS teams. If a travel coach is also a HS coach and has players from their HS team, they either schedule their travel practices on Saturdays or have assistant coaches run the practice on Sunday since they can't have contact with their HS players then.

If you want good clarification on the rule changes it is explained very well on the OHSAA site BUT under the BASEBALL page. I was looking at the Baseball side as we are starting 9/1 and that is when softball can begin also.

With the 4 players at a time under the same roof., If you have dedicated coach he could potentially spread out over a evening and a week and easily coach all players.
