OHSAA rule/eligibility question

My dd (7th grade) has been invited to practice with the high school team this year and be "bat girl" during the season. I was told this weekend, that is a big NO NO with OHSAA. Has anyone heard of this. I would love to have her practice with the high school team, but don't want to mess anything up for the team now or her eligibility in a couple years.

I know for basketball dd's 8th grade team was going to scrimmage the freshmen team they killed that because it is not allowed.
I know I read some rule about this but I don't know when it actuallly comes into effect. i.e. when pitchers and catchers report or after team has been selected. As far as being a bat girl, I don't think there is any problem with that, I have seen that with younger siblings all over the place.

My DD was asked in 8th grade. When I asked around I was told she could lose a year of eligibility.

From the 2009-2010 OHSAA General Sports Regulations:

34. Grades 7 & 8
34.1) A student shall not participate in more than one interscholastic contest on any one day unless permitted by specific sports regulations. EXCEPTIONS: baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis. (See specific sport regulations.)

34.2) Sports Season Waiver - Schools, leagues or conferences may adjust seasons to accommodate school teams because of the lack of availability of physical facilities or personnel. Proposed changes in seasons shall be submitted in writing to the Commissioner and include the proposed dates of the 7th & 8th grade season not to exceed the length of the interscholastic season for the sport concerned. All other regulations regarding contest limitations, required practice time and coaching requirements shall be followed.

34.3) 7th & 8th grade students may not practice with, participate on the same team with or compete against 9th through 12th grade students.

34.4) Students below the 7th grade may not practice with or participate with 7th through 12th grade students.

34.5) It is strongly recommended that the coaches of 7th & 8th grade sports attend the OHSAA rules interpretation meetings for the sports they are coaching.

35. Penalties - PENALTIES for violations will be administered in accordance with Bylaw 11 if not otherwise stated.

She can still be the bat girl, just do not practice with the HS team (Varsity, JV, or Freshman teams).

Ziggy, please go to the OHSAA website http://www.ohsaa.org/ and read the following documents:

2009-2010 General Sports Regulations: http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/rglts/GenSportsReg09-10.pdf
OHSAA Bylaws: http://www.ohsaa.org/general/about/Bylaws.pdf

Then tell all of your DDs teammates parents about the documents and have them read it. Schools, especially at the middle schools, do a very poor job of educating families about the OHSAA regualtions. When something goes wrong, the blame will fall back on the families. Help get the word out. As you will read, this will also tell you about to do and not do if your DD is on a club/travel team.

I will cover with her Bill. Our field house or indoor facility has different sections. Weight room, Indoor field, Batting cages , all in different sections. It is open to any student. The middle school kids can hit in the batting cages, but must stop when the high school girls go to the section of the building, starting today! . Most just head down to the weight room. Keep in mind some of these rules have dates attached to them and may confuse parents. Open gym rules for example. Plus Freshman are not softball players yet. Till they play the first game or scrimmage, so no rules of a Freshman playing let's say with a 7'th grader. Parents can get confused reading these rules, so I tell them talk to the AD, not the coach.

Does anyone else think this is all so stupid? Is OHSAA part of state government or something that the schools belong to and pay for with fees? Don't see how OHSAA can tell children who participate in public school sports what they can and can't do away from school.

I agree Musty. Seems really dumb to me. Curious if surrounding states have similar rules or is this just an Ohio thing?

What amazes me even more than the rules is the fact there are apparently a good number of HS Coaches and AD's that aren't aware of the rules.

If I'm not mistaken, In Pennsylvania you are allowed to practice and play with other teams during high school season.

I have a friend from South Carolina - His daughter is now playing for Presbyterian College in SC. Because the school did not have a middle school team, she was allowed to play with the high school team - she had 6 years PLAYING on the Varsity team

In KY, Jr. High kids can also play on the HS team

Did I read that right? A sixth grade team can't scrimmage a 7th grade team.

Does OHSAA really think that they were protecting Lebron James if they wouldn't let him play against high school kids when he was in 8th grade? Or, were they protecting the high school kids from being embarrassed?

We have a girl in the 7'th grade that would start on most high school varsity teams that is a catcher. She is that good.
