We almost did the same thing with Aubs this upcoming spring, going to have her work out with her schools team. Luckily after I asked LadyKnights whom is a high school coach about that he advise me not to and told me the ruling on that. Not worth the risk of loosing out when they are in school due to being not allowed to play.

I coach HS and travel ball and dislike the OHSAA rules like everyone else but here is the bottom line. OHSAA is not telling you that your DD can't practice with her travel team year around, or practice with the HS team.
What they are telling you is that they run HS sports here in Ohio, and if you want to play in their game you will abide by their rules, or you won't be allowed to play. It's no different than any other thing in life. Even driving your car there are rules you have to follow, people don't necessarily like them, but they serve a purpose. When you get pulled over for doing 80 mph in a 55 your not going to tell the judge, "It's my car I'll drive however fast I want to." Well his response will be, "It's my road, and I make the rules so you will no longer get to play on my roads, so hand over your license!!"

If you go to Cedar Point and want to ride the roller coaster, you have to be so tall or you can't ride. While your on that ride you need to be in your seat secured with the safety harness, if not than you can't ride the ride. But if you do decide to ride the coaster, and don't wear your belt there could be consequences, same as there are in the OHSAA. Play by the rules, or take your chances. Nobody is telling you have to play by the rules, just that they're there.;&

Another reason why Ohio will never get on the map. Too many rules thinking they are protecting kids.

I couldn't agree more! My 2 DD's play in KY during the summer, and you can tell the difference between those that play there from OH vs KY. 7th and 8th grade can play on the H.S. Varsity Team.

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!

Does anyone else think this is all so stupid? Is OHSAA part of state government or something that the schools belong to and pay for with fees? Don't see how OHSAA can tell children who participate in public school sports what they can and can't do away from school.

OHSAA runs under the Department of Education.

Walton Verona High School had a 7th grade girl win the state cross country for a few years.

They also play 8 man football in Kentucky as well for the smaller school districts.

When I talked to NCAA in Indy awhile back.. they called Ohio and OHSAA dinosaurs.

This is why I say we are behind the girls from other states... because of all the restrictions, etc... placed by OHSAA. It'll take a Federal Lawsuit to change things and prove Ohio girls have disadvantage compared to girls from other states ( pick one) when it comes to being able to play more without restrictions... as compared to other states. Which is unfair and unjust in my opinion... when it comes to opportunity for playing time versus other states.

I have no problem that 7th 8th graders can't play HS, there time will come. But why do they allow golf coaches, tennis coaches etc. unlimited contact and HS softball coaches get 10 days in the summer?

Our Middle School has a softball team if DD goes out and makes it, at what time can she not do anything with Club team until M S season is over?

If it is a school sponsored team, she can not do anything with Select team from first game till last game of school ball season. If Jr. High is Club team, no restictions............

Thank you that is what I thought but someone told me from the time you made the team to the end of season and that could be a big difference in in time.

I would agree with Lady Knights and just about everyone else on this post regarding too many rules. But having been a high school and select coach in multiple sports for over 30 years and having children of my own I feel that building the life and social skills that are so important to our childrens mental growth during middle and high school go hand and hand with the age and grade levels. The majority of middle school kids who are 12, 13, and 14 yrs old don't have the mental or physical maturity level to be on the same teams as 16, 17 and 18 yr olds nor would I want them to. Granted there are exceptions to everything and though some middle schoolers have the physical and mental ability the majority do not. As well if we allow these kids to move up it strips their classes talent pool. We have the ability in select or travel teams to move them up age wise, this allows the advanced athlete to compete agianst tougher competition if chosen. Society forces our kids to grow up too fast in my honest opinion. Let's let them be kids in school while they can.

That's just Crazy Talk. How dare you deprive a 14 year old the chance to verbal to a D1 school...

That is basically talk of a jr. high coach who won't teach the basics of bunting or sliding.....Or have a sign in a game for either, wanting to feel like they are doing something great..........But not OHSAA rules
