Paid Coaches Good Or Bad

I spoke to a former Ohio State player who is now a cental Ohio high school coach. She has started her own travel organization to help girls in her area develop. She said her goal was to have young former college players that know the game but are energetic and excited coach her teams. So she fundraises and works hard at the finances so she can pay for these coaches hotels. Otherwise they may not be "inclined" or financially able to be with the teams for all the tournaments. I was very impressed with her and her organization, and I can see why there could be a need to help out the coaches. Especially if they're non-parent coaches.

She is a quality person and has an awesome job of building a feeder system into her high school program.

I have been a part of non paid coaches that have little commitment and it costs the girls big time. If the money brings coaching that is right for the team and it makes them better then I am all for it. The money is worth it. The best situation is the coaches that do it because the love it and that is what makes them great!

I guess I'll chime in without any animosity...

We pay for services all day long, what makes softball any different? Because they are girls? Because so many others do not? Every person/family/player needs to find their fit and if they feel it's OK to pay for a coach have at it. It's their decision and cash. We don't judge people for having weekly pool service, house cleaning, or even having a sit down dinner whenever they want. It's a lil' different then some of those examples to some and others not. Shoot holes in the reasoning and heck I'll even help you. Well if soquer can do it why can't softball coaches? Now, if they are bad coaches, their pay may reflect it, right?? And yes some will take the money and do a poor job, but shouldn't that work itself out just as poor employees find a way to get fired? We have zero paid coaches and I'm a non-parent coach for my first year ever and I have no issues not getting paid. FOR ME, payment is seeing them get better and grow! And I love that!!!!

Agreed. As a player of both sssocccerrr and softball, I have to say coaching across the board in Sssocccerrr is far greater and it is simply because the game requires Skilled Players at every position or you get killed.

Softball, unfortunately is being coached as if every position/player isn't critical therefore the level of coaching expected or accepted by parents if far less.

And this is the #1 reason many kids don't ever make the softball field because at at 5-6 their parents are engaged by an extremely intelligent and credible sssocccerrr coach that shows commitment to developing their dd for making their HS Sssocccerrr team, while they just watched a bizarre two months of poor coaching at the t-ball rec level softball. It is no brainer to a parent as to where they want to spend their time and money. Therefore the best athletes get the best training and that would be in Sssocccerrr.

I coached the m c madness this past summer and I am a non-parent coach. They were kind enough to pay for my lodging and it was very much helpful to me personally and appreciated! I love to coach and it was a very nice gesture and showed appreciation to our thank-less job which I would do 360 days a year! SOFTBALL IS GREAT!! Thank you M C Madness

360 days! I'm trying to think what 5 days you wouldn't coach. ;)

1. Christmas Day
2. Easter
3. New Year's Day
4. Mother's Day
5. Thanksgiving

We all know Father's Day isn't it .. as Fathers just LOVE spending "their" day watching their DD's play. Nothing better than that to a Dad. :yahoo:

There's 365 days in a year... every four years 366 days.

That's why I was wondering what the other five days were.

At age 5-6, most sokker teams have kids that swarm around the ball like bees, and the parents equate that to their child accomplishing something....after all, they're chasing the ball and the parents are cheering for them. Sokker is simply more easier to play at the younger ages than baseball or softball. It is easier to kick and chase a sokker ball than it is to field, throw or hit. Since baseball and softball is harder to play at the younger ages than sokker, most people equate that to the fact that the coaching in sokker is better because they see immediate results. Also, at the youth level, it is easier to coach sokker for the simple fact that the kids can get the fundamentals down quicker since it is an easier sport to play.

They're two totally different sports demanding much different skill sets. The average 5-6 year old kid would excel in sokker over softball or baseball just about every time. It has nothing to do with coaches.....it has to do with initial abilities. Your typical youth sokker coach will always look better than a comparable youth baseball or softball coach for this very reason. My older dd played select/elite sokker until she found volleyball. Some coaches were good while others were not....just as in softball.

I don't feel that it matters whether an organization pays its coaches or not, there are good coaches out there that are paid and others that just do it for the love of the game.

I feel it boils down to why the coach is coaching, for the $$ or for the kids. My organization addresses it by ensuring it doesn't cost a coach anything to coach, we cover their expenses. If you want to make money coaching, you should look for a position elsewhere.

I think since there are 365 days in a year, he was coming up with the 5 days you were missing. 360 degrees in a circle though. It's all good. ;&
