pay per play @your school

No doubt. Little Miami's inability to pass a levy resulted in the district being placed in fiscal emergency by the state this past July.

The levy issue has been on the ballot seven times in the last 2-3 years, and has failed every time. It will be on the ballot again in May, but I don't see how it will pass, as the proposed mil rate will be even higher than it has been previously. It is a very real possibility that the district will end up being dissolved. In the meantime, the quality of the education drops as good teachers seek employment elsewhere, where the future holds more promise.

At this point I am very seriously considering moving, even though my property values have dropped off a cliff, and chances of finding a buyer are slim. Any good districts in SW Ohio looking for pitching?

People are tapped out. I don't think anyone is in a financial position to pass a school levy anywhere, and shouldn't have too!!! The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled 3 seperate times that funding schools with property tax levys is unconsitutional, however our states poloticians are just plain too lazy to come up with an alternative plan for funding! Lottery money did you say....well there's another scam on the tax payers of Ohio. FYI for every dollar that a school recieves in lotto money the state takes back a dollar of state funding. Maybe they should be less concerned with their perks, trips, personal expense accounts, lavish life style and parties and FIX THIS MESS!!!!!!!! We are a minority in the US by funding our schools this way, and why is that.......BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK!

wow, our parents for our pa team complain about fundraiser to feed the players to away games, team banquet, end of season gifts for players, coaches, field crews, hitting facility rentals, etc.
The only pa school I know of that pay to play are the ones that get to take spring trips south.

how do they come up with that ?
coaches salary plus what ?

yes plus coachs benifits, plus all the game cost ie; umpires, balls, field rental, janitor, sercurity.
Than the AD's salary and benifits divided by number of teams, plus many other admin cost...

And get this one the school has to pay $5,000 to rent Byers Field for football and So##er games per game......Guess who owns Byers Field...............Parma City School Board.....they pay themselfs and added that into the cost..

Our levies have not passed in about 12 years

Our Ohio school systems push everything off on the community. They put these levies on the ballot and when they don't pass they make the community feel ashamed, then hold them hostage. Then they punish the kids for it by cutting things out and punish the parents by making them pay more anyway for the things that remain. The school systems here are broken and the leadership is out of control, corrupt and manipulating!

Had the parents meeting last night with Norwalk`s varsity coach. Our cost will be $35 for the 2011 season.
I can handle that!

LOL.....that's not pay to play. That's probably the cost to get matching equipment bags or spirit wear or something like that.:lmao:

The Legislature is already getting ready to change the law from what I hear. They will divide the district and the homeowner of the Little Miami district will assume the tax rate of the new tax district they fall into under the new redistricting.

Of course, you can pay for the DD to go to the school of her choice as well. In that case, I think you still pay the redistricting tax rate.

I lived outside of Blanchester awhile back when their levy was going up for vote. They was looking for a levy to match state funds to build their new school building.. which they desparately needed. I voted yes and it shot my property value up when it passed... Seriously, it did.

Clinton-Massie keeps passing their operating levy for their school. I went out there for a football game this year. the first playoff game against Cincy Taft. I had been back there in years. WOW.

What I see the problem in Little Miami is the fact that they passed a levy to build the new schools ... now they needed a levy to pass to pay for the operation of their new schools. The back to back "hit" on the taxpayer was misunderstood by many. I just think they could have not paid so much for building the school ( MANY COST OVERRIDES HAPPENED ) and kept back some of the funds from the first levy to operate it.

That is what Blanchester did and it seemed to work for them. My first question when I went to the "pre-levy meeting" was:

"Is this levy being used to build a school with enough room for classroom expansion in the next five years?" (YES)

"Are you board members going to strictly watch the cost overrides?" (YES)

"Are you going to come back to me, as a taxpayer, in a couple of years and ask for an operating levy?" (NO)

"If there is cost overrides, are you going to spend the money on those overrides or cut costs somewhere else in the building of said new school?
( If there is cost overrides, we will cut down on the square footage of the size of the new building versus spending extra money )

After that answer, I said, " I'll vote for it then as a person that has no children in this district. Obviously, we need new schools as the ones we have are falling in. If it is not right now, it will be later on down the road when it cost EVEN more", and I walked away and out the door. This was after three hours of listening to people asking dumb stuff over and over.

My point with Little Miami, is the people didn't ask the questions needed to understand the process and the board elected to their posts are just parents without a clue about business.

That's where Little Miami's problem lies ... too many cost overrides and people not understanding when you build the big school.. you got to have funds to run the place !!! Back to back levies ( one for building and one for operations ) just confused the people of the district and the school board is to blame for them having that lack of knowledge for they were not "HONEST" with the people. Thus, their taxpayers who support them stopped supporting them.

The best thing for Little Miami and their students would be if the whole board resigned and start new. Because nobody trusts them now. If the taxpayers can't trust the board..then that new levy will NEVER get passed.

I feel for you Merlion. I do. Rock and a hard place comes to mind.

If Ohio would just fund their schools like pretty much every other state in the nation there would be no reason for levies, meetings, or confusion.

Yeah, I would have to agree. I have lived in quite a few states in the course of my adult life, and I don't recall this cr@p happening anywhere else.

We don't have pay to play since we pass our levies, but it also means we pay a lot in property taxes. Those school taxes do a lot more than fund athletics, too. My daughter would probably only play travel ball if we had to pay a large fee for high school ball. I don't know how other states are funding schools, but we did not vote for money for our schools in PA or MI while we lived there.

Most of the other states I've visited during my dd tourney's fund their schools with a statewide sales tax. The only bad thing is that Ohio's politicitians would create some loop hole to keep the schools from getting it just like they have with the lottery money. The last person out to leave Ohio please turn off the lights. We've been electing a bunch of greedy idiots for years, however that's all we've had to choose from.:lmao:

Um no, not Against the law, its a new year 2011 and in 2011 all sports will pay unless a levy passes

Um no 2010 2011 would be considered same school year new school year starts after summer 2011 2012 thats when they could change the policey. To be fair to seniors.

No because everything goes by the fiscal year, and schools go by the calendar year as their fiscal year. It was that way even back when we went to school. I agree it seems that the year should go from july to end of june but in matters like this it goes by fiscal year. I did our 501(c)(3) as fiscal year from Aug 1st to July 31st, made better sense to me.
