It happens all season long. Is it right? No. Can you do anything about it? No. Some teams want to win at all costs.

If it bothers you, just take notes all season, only tryout for teams that don't do it! Not much you can do about it in season; even if you disagree with it.

There are a couple good reasons to do so also. 2011 years ago my team had 3 season ending injuries and one couldn't go (back injury). Only had 7 players so I picked up 3 players two weeks in advance to head down to Tennessee.

Then yes, you need to pick up, to have the other 7 players finish the season. But, if you have 12 healthy, then...

I think teams should play with what they played with all year., unless you have a situation such as LakeErieHillbilly had with the injuries. I don't think the other 7 should miss out on the opportunity because of circumstances beyond their control. No injuries, No subs. Just my opinion.

Valid points ... I can see injuries and players/families that simply choose not to travel to WS or Nationals would warrant subs or pick up players. I can also see teams that want to pick up an extra pitcher but how/where do you draw a line on the limit of additions and enforce it?

Have mixed emotions on pick up players ....... several years ago, my 10u player made it to nationals while her 12u sister's team failed to qualify. Nationals for the 10u and 12u were being held in the same city. I had made a post on OFC saying I had a 12u player who was able to play in Nationals if any teams needed a player. I received a call within 10 minutes of the post. Was advised that the team had 2 or 3 girls who were not traveling. My dd joined them for the week. We went to the 12u Nationals without any expectations knowing she was an extra player and would play when time was allowed. Once she entered the game, she did some excellent things ... next thing you know she's in the starting line up and shining. I went from the dad who felt bad seeing her sit the bench (but at least ready to play) to excited she was in the line up and doing very well ... even more excited to see her in the starting line-up until the light bulb lit and I realized there had to be someone extremely upset with what was going on ..... did not take long to pick out which player and family was being affected. (we jointed them as a relief player and a fill in because they were traveling with less ... did not intend on stepping on toes) While I'm bummed that we upset a family, it ended up being one of the best fastpitch experiences ever for my then 12u dd.

Now fast forward two years to our 14u team who had played their hearts out all season and earned a spot at nationals. The week before nationals, the girls who had played all season were told that the team was picking up some extra players for nationals and that every girl had to compete well at practice to earn or keep their positions .... In the back of my mind I'm thinking this is going to be a nightmare if things don't work out and the regular girls don't get to play time OR if the pickups do not get to play whatever times they were promised. Needless to say, when you are in the losers bracket and out of the tournament early it sure makes it tough to get extra players in the game. We walked away from that tournament a torn apart team because regulars AND some pick up players did not play.

Long story short .....

Adding players due to injury or to fill for players who chose not to travel --- I'm for it.
Adding players to give a competitive advantage after earning the spot with regulars --- against it!

Stay safe everyone .... best of luck to everyone who is trying out for new teams and organizations!

I agree with you Dave. Win or lose with the team you built, as a team all or nothing. Subs for injury, missing players, ok, but not to push loyal players to the bench just to win. This is not the pros, we teach these kids, and maybe ourselves, life lessons and you lead by example.

Couldn't agree more! Build your core, keep your core and don't bring in subs unless.you need to replace.due to injuries/ absence.
our dd's team was torn apart this year by bringing in subs and replacing the regulars, and not winning anything....

We started with 11 and had one quit and one let go so we picked up 2 one batted and one played the field so we made 1 player out of 2 so our normal players still played.

That's smart!
