Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Picking pitches at 10u?

I WAS there waiting for my niece's game. I was drawn to this game because it was a good game. Both teams are very good teams. But rather than let his players learn to adjust or learn to find a pitchers tells, this coach chose repeatedly to yell out. His team is a great hitting team so this struck me a showboating and being an overall dillhole. After talking to some others and finding out who this guy is, I can honestly say that, sadly, this behavior does not surprise me based on his reputation. My point is, these kids are smart and passionate enough to be taught how to read a pitcher and how to adjust. Coach your kids instead of making joke of the game.

I have learned NOT to rely on what others say about people....9 times out of 10 it is very inaccurate. I do not feel as if anyone should go on a public forum and bash anyone personally if you have NEVER interacted with that person, I also teach that to my 10 year old!!

I enjoy most of the posts on here and find most of them informative, however, I have also learned to ignore ones like the above.

I am curious what reactions the coaches and parents of the other team had when they were called out by a 10year old! Which again I think is amazing character, she will make a great coach one day!

Clearly, that was not a lesson well learned considering you quoted and replied to it.

And if you read the entire thread, I never mentioned anyone by name. Not even by team. However, there were obviously others who saw it and did mention the team, so I guess not all is hearsay.

There are alot of things in this world that you wouldn't or don't do even if it isn't against the rules or laws. I don't know the team or players but have been in the situation and will reciprocate when it happens. What comes around goes around. But Class is Class. I would feel guilty if my kid got a hit under those circumstances. Do they keep 2 sets of stats? .325 unaided and .700 Coach assisted? Crazy. Let the kids play.

Hpifm, I hope you don't get upset when that pitcher has the same maturity and drive and desire as that batter whose coach is stealing signs and calling out pitches drills the next few batters and possibly injures one or two. Is it worth that? It works both ways. I applaud the pitcher for calling them out. Was the storm involved in this contest?

I will say this in all seriousness ... there are a lot of people out there who don't really realize what is OK and what is not OK in dealing with youth sports. I know for a fact that I did a few bonehead things back when I was much younger and my kids were young, but it's like anything else and you mature over time. I know I still make mistakes ... it's not because I'm a bad person, but sometimes I am either uninformed or I let the situation (e.g., competition) get the best of me. I actually learned a lot over the years by reading OFC and/or observing others. I think topics like this are a great way for others to learn what is OK and what is not. I give people the benefit of the doubt, and trust that 99% of them are like me and will learn over time.

Good question, who was the pitchers team?

It was the Storms pitcher

Found it under the metro-dayton-asa-usa-national-qualifier-june-7-9th post, I had to send that coach a PM and told him to get her an ice cream on me, lol!

Was watching some 10u games in between our 14u games. One game a player and coach were yelling pitches to their batters. Honestly seemed to be more of a distraction to the batters as they were focusing on their team rather than the pitcher. They ended up losing anyway. As some people have posed on this thread, let the batters watch to pitchers release point.

As a matter of fact I applaud the young lady for doing what she did, not that I would recommend it to everyone. I'm not so sure the "coaches" were calling the pitches as much as the fans, and I was there. It was very evident that her coaches pitch selection was fastball, change, change, fastball, change, no variation. She threw an excellent change up. I apologize for gettng riled up but it seems that everything and anything gets so blown out of context on ALL message boards.

Not sure I agree with the young lady for doing what she did. Certainly a sign of frustration. Saw this happen this weekend to my daughters team (at another tournament) also and her coach switched signs every inning to stop it and they are also 10u.

Fri-Sun in Hot weather each umping 10-15 games I dont think is fast cash. I hear what your saying though.

Playing here this weekend great team list Good time. There were a few questionable umpire calls an discussions. All in all was a good weekend for my team. The last few years I have ran into several coaches like this. My funny experience with the umpire s was I asked for the count on my batter an got a 3-3 response on his hands. Instantly I said that can't be right. But if it is correct I still have one pitch coming right. He looked at me an laughed then looked at his counter an the count was 3-1. I laughed at this we moved on. Can actually say it was a good tournament But especially at 10u umpires have to call corners an go knees to the letters. A few of them where very tight on there zones an that can really effect the game. But consistency is important as well. With out the whole strike zone an corners the hitters Are at a huge advantage an coaches begin to tell there hitters to take pitches. No good pitching coach teaches the kids to throw the middle of the plate belt high. Umpires can sometimes eliminate pitchers effectiveness by eliminating half the zone.

Still curious, what did the other team and coaches say when the pitcher turned and asked them that?

My first thought was that this was a bit disrespectful for a 10 year old to speak that way to a coach but under the circumstance I thought it was a fairly courageous act.
