Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitching speeds

Better yet how about all the 10u's this year saying they are pitching at 50+ and 4 and 5 pitches.

Questions is are they hitting 50+ everytime, can they hit their spots.
Just let them play the game for the love of the gam. Parents need to take theire mommy daddy glasses off.

I have several girls coming up from 10u and 11u. I have clocked my 10u pitcher at 50 to 51 consistantly and can hit her spots. Moving up to 11u speed isn't going to do it for her. She is developing her spins and completing a change up hitting 35mph. Tight spins will be what to look for. Older age players can use their directional hitting to destroy your fastball. Put some spins on girls!!!!

In Florida last week at the WS, I got to see all the age groups (10/12/14) at one time or another. I was little shocked that I did not see higher speeds from the 12 & 14 categories. At the 12's, 90% of the pitchers never topped more than 52 but they could really locate the ball. I watched a handful of 14U games & none of them came close to 55. The speed I was most impressed w/ was at the 10U age. I saw several girls between 48-50 but all of them did have a size advatage for their age as they looked like they could be second yr 12's.

Well said Shark99!
Are they throwing strikes or balls and walking in runs!!
speed vs control/accuracy?!

I saw something on the NFCA website when looking for my DD's results that listed speeds and if that was good, average, best etc. Apparently my DD needs work with a 57mph fastball consistently. That was the category she fell into..."needs work". I don't know if she'll ever get those 60mph speeds, but you never know. I agree with the thought that speed isn't everything.

What's a good mph for a curve and drop ball? I don't have hers in front of me, but I'd like to find that out. Her change was 40mph.

Being able to locate your fastball while breaking the strike zone plain anywhere you want to put it. Having a coach that teaches tight spins will create speed. Keeping your weight back and using hips and legs, not upper body strength will help with velocity.

Paramount showcase results are posted. Fastest pitching speed was 58 for a fastball. Know I'm confused on home to first. They ran from 66 feet and my dd's time was 0.24 faster than NHCA camp from 60 feet. Not sure how to read this..

When we need to start a campfire, I just have DD throw a fastball. I think she's up around the sound barrier, but I haven't clocked her officially.

Near Mach 2.0, I was calling the dish and couldn't even see the Ball to make the Call!;&

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing too SLOW!

How many 13 year olds do you think can pitch between 57-60 mph?

Here is something that I had bookmarked in my Internet Explorer favorites from the fastpitching.com website.

Average and Top Pitching Speeds for Various Age Groups:

Keep in mind that the speeds listed are just what we have seen after 17 years of being around fastpitch softball. They are by no means totally accurate, simply a rough estimation.

10U - Avg. Speed 38-42 - Top Speed 48-53 Low to mid 50's is very rare.
12U - Avg. Speed 44-50 - Top Speed 53-59 Upper 50's is extremely rare but we have seen as high as 61 mph from a 13 year who was still eligible to play 12U
14U - Avg. Speed 49-54 Top Speed 56-61
16U - Avg. Speed 53-57 Top Speed 60-68 Again high 60's is very rare but there are a few capable
18U - See 16U

Thanks. The 12u line in the post falls in line with what I saw word for word. Thanks

If those listed "average" speeds were from Ohio kids, they would ALL be very good DI prospects - PROVIDED everything else (accuracy, offspeed - all the tools) was intact. The problem is, it depends on who is operating the gun.

A TRUE 63 - 64 is Big-10 material. So I find it extremely rare - usually wishful thinking. I've YET to see any kid from Ohio even approach 70 mph. All I can say is, when you do TRULY see a 70 mph pitch, you'll know it. It's like the difference between the 80 mph baseball pitcher, and the 95 mph.

A good project would be to go watch some known elite pitchers (college level) and compare those speeds to 16u and below. I think you'll notice the difference.

Well put Sammy. I want to know about the mental toughness of these players too. Who are calling their pitches? They should come off the field after the game and feel like they just took a physics exam!!! Pitchers should know how to map out their batters. They need to adjust speeds, locations and have the ability to know where runners are and pitch to the batters accordingly. Like I said, Physics!!! Not to mention coaches can help out by adjusting their defense based on what pitches are thrown.

I agree there are not a lot of pitchers throwing in the 60's especially at 43ft. However they do exists.

My DD who will be pitching in college and had DI offers threw consistant 58-62. I was at Stingrays last year and the coach of another team clock her that day 60-63. At an NFCA camp where they yell out your speed she hit 61 and this was at 43ft.

They are around. The big difference is my DD very seldom threw a ball on the plate, had a wicked curve a very nice rise and an Okay change.

At 43ft this summer her curve was extremly nasty and her change was off the charts. The extra 43ft has allowed her ball to even move more than it used to. However the extra 3ft has her Rise Ball strugling.
