Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitching speeds

Each year we hear all about all the girls throwing over 60 MPH. I'm looking at the pitching speeds at the NFCA camp with some of the best pitchers in the state at this camp. 62MPH I think was the fastest , but not many over 60?

;&;&Not sure what state you are from, but your pitchers are nowhere as talented as our OHIO Pitchers:lmao::lmao:

Thought the same thing when I looked at these. DD hit 60 and she was ecstatic -- all the other pitchers that get more press than her were 58 and 59.

We watched a guy with a radar gun timing one of the top 18U pitchers in the state this weekend and she consistently hit 61 with her fastball.

Glad to see the use of the revfire at NFCA. Rotation and speed change will get you farther than any other strength.

At Pennsbury, there where only a few in the 60's, our pitcher hit 65, there was one girl there that through faster who hit 66.

Your right there wasn't many 60's, but everyone will tell you that their daughter throws 60.

I have not seen many 60's all summer. Those who are hitting it consistently are going D1. Seen many girls with 62-63 on their profiles who were more like 57-58.

If you go back to the WCWS, many of those pitchers were consistently hitting 58-89.

I like girls who throw hard, but I prefer ones who get people out.

Agree with you Vasko. You can be fast but are you throwing strikes for outs or balls for walks.

We do indeed have a pitcher throwing a true 60-61.
Avg. 58-59 but yes, 60-61 at times. She will be going to college this Fall. :)
I have recieved many calls from college coaches interested in her, but she has already signed.

Better yet how about all the 10u's this year saying they are pitching at 50+ and 4 and 5 pitches.

Questions is are they hitting 50+ everytime, can they hit their spots.
Just let them play the game for the love of the gam. Parents need to take theire mommy daddy glasses off.

One altogether ordinary pitcher locally claims to have nine pitches. Fairly impressive, eh?

Except when you consider I can throw 378 pitches (although not all in the same day), including the Swirlybird Terror Raptor, which hits the batter right between the shoulder blades and sends him paralyzed and sprawling face first into the plate, whereupon chipmunks come out from their burrows under the visitors' dugout and start nibbling his fingers off.

(Slow head shake with lips tensed.)

Which is to say, I don't believe in any pitch I can't see.

A 60 mph + pitch is nice but I'd take a pitcher who has average speed for her age and excellent command of her all her pitches especially the breaking ball pitch (curve, screw, and rise). These girls are truly strike out artists.

Someone who watched me pitch this spring wanted to know how fast i throw and said they thought I threw over 70. I said I wish! Mind you, this was a student at my school who doesn't know that if I threw over 70 I'd be out in Arizona or Tennessee being groomed as the next Jennie finch =P
Anyway, I'm sure at some point I've probably hit ~64-65 for a pitch or two, but I'm consistently at just 58-60 and still one of the faster pitchers in my d3 conference. I've also seen pitchers on the wcws that throw about 59-63 Speed is nice, but is not everything! You don't have to throw a gazillion mph to be effective! Imo, movement means so much more...Any hitter (but me) can time a 65 mph fastball...not many can hit a well placed curve, even if it's only going 56 mph...

Another important stat from the NFCA Camp-->only ONE kid ran a sub 3.0 home to first time!!!!! Tells me something I already knew--everyone lies about their times!! :)

The NFCA times the sprints the same way I do--from any stance and start the clock on first movement.

63 mph pitch consistently thrown for a strike = homerun.
63 mph pitch consistently thrown for a ball = baserunners.
Getting the above two reversed = 2 runs in one clip.

Gameface and Comfortplan are two that can easily explain why an accomplished pitcher should approach every game with a PLAN.

This is getting almost as ridiculous as the 90 mph HS baseball pitcher! Parents - do your DD's a favor. Instead of focusing on your kid's top speed to impress your friends, focus on helping them to become a more effective pitcher. Anyone with common sense knows that if any kid was throwing a TRUE 65+ with any control, they would be looking at PAC-10. So take off those rose colored glasses and pay attention to those NFCA numbers. Instead of wishing for something that isn't there and possibly never will be, maximize their strengths. Most college pitching staffs love to have several different styles (speeds) of pitchers. IMO, CHANGE of speed and delivery are FAR more effective than just speed alone.
