GRS,
Your not wrong but even today the MLB swing is going through and evolution. The MLB swing is getting quicker with a combination of efficient rotational motion and mechanics that come from the body core and not as much from the arms and the legs. That is the direction I was headed in with my disconnection post on here a month ago.
Even in the realm of rotational coaches there is difference of opinion on the best method. Bret mentioned both the Right View pro and Epstien methods. There is also Steve Englishbey and Jack Mankin and a host of other rotational guru's that all have different ideas about what the most effiecent swing for rotational should look like and how it should be performed.
Keep in mind that a lot of it is about the all mighty internet dollar and saying my method of teaching is best and is better than his/hers and this is why. They have to have something to differentiate themselves from the next guru.
I have the Steve Englishbey videos and I really like what he teaches. Even more so for young kids becasue its SIMPLE and will be easy for kids to use and understand. It is some of the best information I have seen, and I have studied many of these people.
One difference between Englishbey and Epstein is that Englishbey doesnt like counter rotatation. (Taking the hands back toward the catcher to "Load"
I dont either for young players, and even in the older players it can cause disconnection of the swing along with bat drag/lag through the strike zone. I didnt embrace Epstien for that reason.
I have not made it to Right View Pro to see what is being taught. Not enough time, but I will sooner or later. My biggest problem with that method is cost. It isnt cheap to get set up.
Englishbeys method to me is very good because it follows the less is more approach, which I have always embraced with the swing, and with teaching kids when it comes to hitting.
His method has less premotion, less use of the arms and legs (Which eliminates a lot of opportunity for disconnection) and more use of the core muscles in the body to generate rotational speed, quickness, and power. It is also easy to explain and use.
If Englishbey comes to your area for a hitting clinic make sure you get there to learn about his method of swing training. He is currently working on development of an internet site. When its up I will post it out here if anyone is interested in viewing some of his material.
Consider this my endorsement for this year.
By the way I also like what Jack Mankin teaches at batspeed.com.
