Crismon, paragraph or not I like what you have to say. Things have changed so much in with kids today. I remember in HS a Jr. losing his spot to a sophmore on my basketball team. Saturday morning the boys father and body building older brother comes in to practice to express his displeasure to our coach.

After about 15 minutes of very animated discussion the coach blows his whistle and calls the boy over. He calmly tells him to go change and leave his gear on the locker room floor because his father is not happy with his playing time. The boy looks heart broken and the dad trys to change his tune. Our coach calmly says to him "I am paid by the district to make the best decisions I can for this TEAM and I will not have my decisions questioned by a parent. I wish you and your family well" That was the end of the boys HS basketball career and coach never had a parent show up at a practice ever again.

Today the coach would be in front of the school board defending why the other player who was clearly better and earned their spot replaced an upper classman!

Stingrays~that's the way it should be. Some things shouldn't ever warrant a parents intervention. By the time they are in jr high they should be handling things with a coach on their own. If you are moved from a position my kids have been taught to ask why and fix it. Last year my dd was starting center field for travel in the fall. Missed the first two tournaments because of HS and was moved to left the first two she came back. She worked hard and earned that position back by proving she would bust her a$$ there-errorless of course not that isn't realistic but work hard on every play to move and back up her lft and rt fielders and to back up second on throw downs. She finished the rest of the season there. Same thing in football-my son is small but was the O player of the year 2 yrs prior and wasn't given a chance by one coach to run the ball. Could I have threw a fit or pulled him because he wasn't getting what he wanted. Sure could have but what does that teach him-if the going get tough-run or throw a fit. NOT what I want to teach them. He didnt get the ball as much as he would like but has been working hard all summer to get bigger and faster...granted he can't help that he is 13 and only 4'11'' 100lbs...but the kid has done more push ups and sit ups then I can keep track of...Hopefully the coach will see it this year and if not...keep training until the next year.

I have heard my kids come home from school with stories are parents throwing fits to have their child on a team or squad. Parents are a little overprotective these days and unfortunately the child is the one who usually suffers. Who wants their child to hang with the child of a crazy parent?

The way I see it, is that quiting is the easy way out. Why do you think high schools changed the transfer rules. Didn't they call it the Lebron rule or something. Kids jump from team to team with no penalty so now they make them sit out a year unless they have an address in the district. If you as a player/parent are unhappy, rule#1--- approach the coach and set up a time to discuss your thoughts. Half the time we make assumptions and they aren't even close to the truth. Most teams run 11/12 player rosters to help with playing time issues. When player A leaves, that can drop you down to 10, then one injury or family issue and you are stuck with 9. Now go play in 90+ degree weather with 9, and the team has to play 4-5 games in a row. Good luck with that. If AFTER you talk with the coach/coaches and you are unhappy, finish the season and say thank you but we are moving on. Some people are defending the right to quit if they feel they aren't getting what they deserved. I always like to look at things on both sides. Lets say the team shows up and one of the coaches is missing, then the players are told that he/she is coaching with another team this weekend because he/she was told he/she could coach third all weekend and that team has a better chance of winning the tournament than his/her original team! Players would be furious!! And if its about playing time....I like to tell players what Cindy Bristow(former pro softball coach) said "Don't get mad, Get better!"

When are parents going to see the whole picture and not just the snapshot
of there child.
There is one overriding point in all of this. One pays for a spot with TIME and MONETARY assets. This payment is given in the assumption that some VALUE will be returned. When there is no value anywhere to be had, procured or otherwise rendered a greener field can be understood by many to be desirous. I do realise that the great Spartans of Travel Ball here to be found in not inconsequential numbers will don their Black Knights' garb to defend The Board from the Arthurs but that proved to be patently absurd. The whole point of life is to be HAPPY and not follow some insane Elmer Gantry dictum.

jbennter~ question for you...So being moved out of position (from center to left) not sat just moved for a total 4 games out of entire season warrants a parent talking bad about a coach and his word? And to take the child home mid tournament because she was moved for 2 games after playing there every game until that point? The coach isn't allowed to try something in the best interest of the team? Do you think that is right?

:lmao:

This challenge should have it's own thread. :D

I'm a yank, but I'll try and "git 'er dun"

What he's saying, Clyde, is that if you happen to be Burt Reynolds...you'll always get the crossbow and that dang sporty vest, while Ned Beatty has to squeal REAL good, now. ;& Heck...we's both been trappin' fer a coon's age, yet the cornbread ain't all the same size squares.

And if you're not the only Dale, Kyle, or Bobby on the porch, ya better bring your geetar, cause the banjo ain't fer no rookies. Old Cletus is a man of few words, but that lazy eye makes it all that much easier to keep all those youngins from gettin' all uppity and such. And with all those kinfolk livin' on the same mountaintop, you can't hardly git a word in edgewise no how.

Never question the quiet cousin with that there repeatin' firearm. :p

something about life is about being happy and you don't have to follow a code if you are unhappy....???!! So......you are unhappy at your job..QUIT If you aren't playing short-stop and batting fourth...QUIT If you and your husband/wife are having trouble....QUIT etc. etc. Just keep quiting until YOU are happy. Didn't I see that on the Lion King? Hakuna Matata? :lmao:

Centerfielder went home bc left fielded(your daughter) was treating her like piece of garbage every game leading up to that switch! And at 18u we expect to be playing with team players and not players who tear down their teammates! As for our coach, we like him very much and plan to continue forward with the team. We simple have a difference of opinion on what he's offer to play for him was but that in no way means we Do not respect him and his decisions!

I'm impressed a city boy such as yourself pulled this one off. Maybe I'll bring some shine to practice.

There are good reasons to leave a team, there are bad reasons to leave a team. There is no blanket statement that covers every situation. Those of you stating that quitting or moving for any reason is unacceptable regardless of the situation whatsoever, are fools or have no children or both. Any person that knows me or of me knows how dedicated my kids are to the sport, the team, their teammates and the coaches and it was a huge deal for my kid to move to a different team over the winter.

Believe me, there are circumstances where it is your job as a parent to step in and make sure your kid is in a good, safe and productive environment.

I agree Centerville FP! There is definately gray areas, and once the smoke clears they become a little more clear as well!
