Pitching and Pitchers Discussion RIP IT Mask Saved Her!

Best $40 dollars you will ever spend. My daughter was hit in the face with a smash directly off the bat yesterday. No time to react the girl swung the bat and straight to the face. Thank God she was wearing her Rip It face mask. No doubt she would have been hospitalized with serious injuries and major surgery.

There were two outs in the last inning of a game we were winning 9-3 and two strikes on the batter when this happened. She had been pitching the whole game and my point is this can happen at anytime during a game. She stayed in the game and got the last out and only suffered a cut behind the ear from her eye glasses and a sore jaw.

I know this has been discussed before but why would someone allow their daughter to pitch without wearing a mask? If you are one of those parents or coaches and you are reading this post PLEASE buy your child a mask and make her wear it when she pitches.

Thank God she is ok. What age and how is the mask now? Did it deform or hold up great?

Both my girls will not take the infield without theirs. Glad to hear she is OK.

Our pitchers and corners wear them. After a couple of close calls, we haven't received any agruemnts from the girls.

I make dd wear her mask while pitching or taking infield- she doesn't complain because she saw a girl take one in the jaw last summer but thankfully the girl had on a mask as well::D

Glad to hear she is ok!

I make 8 year old wear one all the time, infield/outfield doesn't matter, last thing I need is for her to get hit in the face and be afraid of the ball!

12U age group. DD is 10 yrs old with a December 31st b-day. Girl who hit the ball I'm told is 13 or will turn 13 and has to play 14u next year.

I checked the mask and it held up great. Took some paint off and the chin holder needs some super glue (it could have needed it before the hit?). I honestly think the gameface would have cracked JMHO.

our pitchers wear them as well as our 3rd base. They all just started wearing them last year. 3rd base started playing in alot more since she started wearing it. She said it makes her feel more confident and safe. Alot of times, I even have to call her back.

Glad to hear your dd is okay.

Just to preface my question I am really happy she is ok and not against the masks at all.

But, is there a reason she is playing up an age bracket. A couple of years, especially at the age level can really make a difference in players skills and physical developement.

Just wondering how many of you have seen girls at 16s and 18s at SS and 2nd wearing masks? Never saw this before until the past few weeks at some tournies in Ohio. Shouldnt a SS or 2nd be able to play infield at that age without a mask? Before anyone goes nuts on me it is an innocent question. My dd plays outfield so it is not a concern but she has been asking why we see it in Ohio at those ages but not in In, TN, KY, WV, NC, GA.

Sorry to hear that happen, glad she's ok:)

They [asa, H.S., Nsa, ect, ect,] should make it "mandatory" to have both corners and pitchers wear face mask.

Until it becomes a rule, expect this to happen

I agree that there may be a difference in skill level where a 10yr old is pitching against a 13 yr old, i'm not so sure that only the younger ones need the mask...the pitcher I saw that took one to the jaw was playing in a very competitive 16U bracket. Although I will say that I did watch a game at Cap City in which after a few innings, the pitcher and infielders all took off their masks- I guess they thought that the team they were playing was not going to put the ball in play- Those of us that noticed this all cringed at the teams arrogance.

My daughter is a pitcher and a short stop. She has to wear her mask when she pitches and we just made it mandatory anytime she is in the infield. Never have to worry about arguments that way.

So, glad to hear your DD is ok.

I played hockey as a kid and back then the pro's didn't wear face masks. They had the faces to prove it. Now they all wear them as they are required. They don't wine about it anymore. All the infield positions should be required to wear one. They won't wine about it long either.

Come on Musty!

Only helmets are mandatory in pro Hockey, not masks.

I know a young lady that plays at the 16u level, for the Lasers scarlet. They play good ball against great teams. When she is in the infield she wears a mask. This made it easier for me to teach my girls at 12 and 14 to wear them.

HCDAD9,

With all the options on defensive schemes for certain game situations, what's to say that the SS isn't playing in at 3rd or the 2B playing in at 1st?

It doesn't take much of an impact to cause a serious eye injury, or a mild concussion. . My dd got hit in the eye with a sokker ball at close range. Retina damage that healed, but she knows how lucky she was and is now required to wear goggles to play sokker the rest of this year. Plus a yearly exam for the rest of her life. Why take the risk. She wears her game face during softball.
